William's Story
Military
I had almost four full years and they were all good. I enlisted to avoid being drafted and chose the Air Force over the Navy. Navy wanted to sign me to a six year enlistment. I got everything I wanted and more, after basic training I was trained for aircraft maintenance on aircraft with reciprocating engines (Props). The tech school was at Sheppard AFB Texas.
Upon graduation in Oct. '70 I was stationed at Mather AFB, Ca. and this was great. This was the first time this young 18 yr. old was really far from home other than basic and tech school. Here, I was truly on my own. Met alot of great guys and kept up with a few, some of us got our orders for 'Nam at the same time but seemed I left first. California was a real education from growing up in Miami, Fl. Alot of strange people at the time, took trips to Reno, Tahoe and 'Frisco. The hippies were great until I came back from 'Nam.
Well, like I said I got orders for 'Nam and began a one year journey of TDYs Beale, Fairchild, England and Clark Air B...Expand for more
ases to learn the EC-47. Finally got to DaNang AB in Oct '71 and flew on the EC-47 with the 362nd TEWS. Several of the maintenance staff from Mather arrived a month later as Flt. Mechs. and made the tour a little more friendly (ha ha). Have kept in touch with two roomates Bruce Dames and Will Cooke. Will came to the EC-47 reunion last year and it seemed like old times after thirty years. At the reunion we had to be the two youngest there since we were only 19 and 21 in Vietnam.
Well I DEROS'd in Oct. '72 headed for Hurlburt Fld, Fl. Hurlburt is an auxiliary fld for Eglin AFB. I spent the last 1 1/2 yrs there which wasn't to bad being fairly close to home yet I had put in for Mather for my return. It seems the Air Force will always send you to the farthest point from where you request to be stationed. Well, I got a 2 1/2 month early out due to the end of the war (Oh, I forgot a police action) so I headed home for Miami and civilian life. Funny, I became a police officer and have been one now since May '74.
