William Stiegler:

CLASS OF 1959
Brooklyn, NY

William's Story

Began S.J. Tilden High School in September 1954 in the Academic Course. My older sister had attended Tilden several years before me, in the Commercial Course, and did academically well, so it was naturally expected of me to do the same. She had helped me all the way during elemtary school, PS115 in Canarsie, so many subjects being taught were allready familiar to me, except Algerbra. That was my nightmare and ended my Academic Course pursuit, after several failures and repeating the same course, only to fail again. To this day, I have never, ever seen anyone solve any sort of mathimatical problem using an Algerbra equation. I have used simple math, learned in PS115 and by my sister, in my daily life to this very day, in the Military, my civilian occupation and various financial situations. I also had a part time job at age 16, working in Manhatten as a Messenger boy, delivering small packages thru-out NYC till 6 PM, and doing most of my home work on the commute both ways. I enjoyed this job, and met numerous show business personaliities. This lasted 5 months, and I deceided to quit, as it was not helping me in my school work. About a year later, myself and 4 of my closest friends became employed in a brand new Super Market that opened in our neighborhood. This was about the time that I should have graduated from Tilden, but I lacked the required number of c...Expand for more
ourses, I had to return to Tilden in September of 1958 to make up the difference, and finally did graduate in January of 1959. Three weeks later I found myself, along with one of my best friends (now deceased) in the US Navy Recruit training camp in Great Lakes, Illinois, where the temperature remained about zero degrees most of the time. The Super Market wanted us to return there when our enlistment expired in 4 years, which neither of us did. I had quite an adventure in the Navy, serving in Florida at an Aviation Fundmental school, then 2 years at a Naval Air Station on Oahu, Hawaii and aboard the USS Midway, an Aircraft Carrier, home ported in Alameda California, near San Francisco, where I worked on the Flight Deck, day & night, deployed to the Western Pacific for a 6 1/2 month cruise, visiting many ports thru-out Asia, then discharged, and even went back in after an absence of 17 years, advancing myself to the title of Senior Chief Aviation Boatswain Mate, 2nd highest from the top of enlisted scales. I also did a lot of traveling with them. In the meantime, I became employed with Pan American Airlines at Idelwyld airport (now JFK) got married, had 2 daughters and 1 son, became employed by Delta Airlines as part of an aquisition in 1991, and remained employed till I was nearly 68 1/2 years old. Am now retired and residing on Staten Island NY.
