William's Story
I joined the Louisiana Air National Guard in Feb 1986 and went to Air Force basic training in Jun 1986. I was trained to install communications infrastrucutre for the Air Force. I was back in Nov and started UNO in Spring 1987.
In Jun 1987, I started working part time at Macys at the Esplanade Mall. Eventually I worked full time in Loss Prevention, moved to Georgia from 1989-1990 with Macys; they promoted me and moved me back to New Orleans as the Asst Loss Prevention Mgr at New Orleans Centre. A year later I was promoted to LP Manager. Things were getting crazy and I decided that the pay for fighting with shoplifters may not be enough. Once a gun was pulled on me, I definitely decided that a pair of Girbaud jeans wasn't worth my life. I left Macys in Aug 1993 and went back to school, this time at NLU in Monroe.
(In 1988, I changed my last name back to my real father's last name, Bevans.)
I have 22 years in the Air Guard now and I just started working full time for them in Aug 2007. I now manage the installation of communications infrast...Expand for more
ructure for the La. Air Guard, an airlift Wing in Jackson, MS, the Guard Training Readiness Center in Gulfport, MS, a Fighter Wing in Montgomery, AL, and a Refueling Wing in Birmingham, AL. I have been to Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Switzerland, Lichenstein, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Afghanistan and Iraq. I love the travel.
I worked full time at Jackson Barracks in a state position from 1995 to 2006. I move up there from electrical trades helper to electrician and my last fiver years there I worked as a computer technician.
In Aug 2005, I was activated at Jackson Barracks in the 9th ward when the flood waters came in. We were picked up in boats and brought to the Mississippis river levee where I was flown via Blackhawk helicopter to the Superdome. I lived the next 7 days in the parking garage as I supported communications for our Operations Center.
I went to work as a communications contractor in Iraq from Jun 2006 until Jul 2007. I was at Balad AB which is about 40-50 miles north of Baghdad.
