William's Story

Where has the time gone (my hair as well)? Quick update since getting pulled drunk for the pond at the Friartuck before graduation and interrogated by the mob in the kitchen with Mike Frank. Set out for undergrad work At Univ at Buffalo (WTF kind of school is "at" and not "of" btw) with Cliff Harris. The hood of the Toyota popped off less than ten miles into the trip and we didn't die (obviously) Started my career in computer science (go Big Blue) Soon realized Morier screwed my aptitude for math and who knew computer science involved math. A 2.7 GPA and too many beers in the first semester and time to change careers. Picked Nuclear Medicine Technology cuz my girlfriend told me to. Drank consistently for the next four years. Graduated and decide upon medicine. Many tactical errors later (never actually going to class doesn't help with professor's recommendations and getting drunk before your premedical interview is; let's just say a bad idea. Four short years, two prior failed attempts later and I was in like flint. I was recommended to take refresher courses prior to medical school as I was an older student, again WTF, But I was too smart for them and refused. I know I graduated from Saugerties High school and they had no clue how bright I was...... Medical School flew by and did research on dead knees and shoulders Gained notoriety internationally as the dude that did knee and shoulder research. In the mean time got married and had three kids 50.5 months apart. Went on to residency in orthopaedic surgery (Yes it's spelled correctly) in Pittsburgh (Can you say Penguins and Steelers and Pitt Basketball) Became a super chief resident (complete with cape) It was a sham the director of the program perpetrated in that if you were selected you could do an additional year of training, do research for one year and take your board exam one year earlier with one less year of tra...Expand for more
ining. Then you could be come a junior attending and operate independently and they got all your earnings. (Yea I agree, maybe not such a bright idea in hindsight) Anyway, went to the Big Apple to do a fellowship in Sports Medicine and Shoulder Surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Did a short stint as assistant team physician to the NY Met's Baseball Club. Highlights were drain a fluid collection from Mike Piazza, Todd Huntley's toe and get called to the managers office the first night on the job. Across the table were two beautiful women in their twenties (Dear Penthouse.. NOT, f***in Billy Joel "It's Just a Fantasy" was more like it) Found myself involved in a real life behind the scenes with Carl Everett and child abuse allegations. Got a job in Poughkeepsie, moved in and stared my first real money stint in 11 years. Long story short, split up with boss, 150K legal battle and 3 years later went back to practice as solo doc. Had offices in Pok and Manhattan (cuz it was way cool to say I was a NYC surgeon) Still in private practice with 3 healthy kids: 21, 17 and 13 years old. Gave up Manhattan practice (cuz I really wasn't cool enough) and busy at my job. Personally, my wife decided absent workaholic Billy is so 200late and it's splitsville. So now I occupy my small spare time playing the drums and running triathlons, my new favorite hobby. This my first year, but I'm hooked. I have already done a marathon, numerous 5k road races, a half ironman and a half dozen sprint tris. My season continues with two additional marathons and a half marathons, 2 half ironman, 2 olympic, a bunch of sprints and duathlons. I have a half ironman the morning of the reunion in Philly area. Looking forward to doing the lake placid ironman, escape from alcatraz and the survival of the shawangunks next year. Hope everyone is well and look forward to reconnecting at the reunion.
