William's Story
Floral Park was a great town to grow up in the 1960's. After high school, I worked a couple of part time jobs while attending college classes in the evening, but didn't over-extend myself at either. Ten months after graduation, I began my career at the New Hyde Park Post Office and worked for a time with Marty Elsasser (FPM '63) and Patrick Walsh (FPM '64) as a letter carrier.
I never served in the military, as my draft number was #341 out of #365 for the year I was to be drafted and I just bought my first new car....a Chevy SS 396! I dated
& married Susan Rivera (FPM '64) in 1972 and became a brother- in- law to Margie (FPM '67) and Christine (FPM '70) and to Dennis Lacour (FPM '65) and Bill Diebold (FPM '69). We had our own reunions at family gatherings. fer to the Port Jervis (upstate) New York Post Office. We bought a house across the Delaware River in Greeley, Pennsylvania and our second daughter was born 3 years later. I received a promotion to a supervisor's position in Monticello, NY then a transfer to Newburgh, NY and finally a promotion to Scranton, PA. After a 19 month stint as acting Postmaster in Carbondale, PA, I became a route inspector for the Harrisburg District and traveled all over the state of Pennsylvania until my retirement in December, 2007.
I finished up with 41 years of Government Civil Service and am enjoying retirement in the country I love. I am like 'Opie' on the Andy Griffith Show, walking to the local fishing hole a quarter mile down the road with my fishing pole over my shoulder. I will be back on Long Island fishing from my brother's boat from time to time, in between vacations in Kitty Hawk, Myrtle Beach and Pompano Beach! Life is good!
