William's Story

Most of my friends will remember me as not to serious when I was in high school. I was involved in a number of things including DJing at the school radio station, WPHS; performing in various spoofs during assemblies for the football, basketball & baseball teams; performing in several plays that the Drama Department put on in the old school gym, & of course being the class clown. I also ran for the student counsel, gave an improvised speech the day after Martin Luther King, Jr., was murdered, before marching downtown & back to Park, and was very political. My story began in Asheville, North Carolina, at 11 AM at the Biltmore Memorial Hospital. I spent the first 7 years of my life there. My family moved to Wisconsin in 1957 to Monroe. We moved to Racine in the Summer of 1961 after my dad completed studies at UW in Madison completing Masters' Degree studies in English, History, & Education. He was recruited by Elizabeth Williams, who was head of the English Department for the Racine Unified School District, and was the major reason my dad chose Racine over Phoenix, Arizona. My friends who lived near me in West Racine could find me playing basketball in the alley across from our house on Blaine Boulevard behind Bill Rassmusen's house with Jeff Goff, Dave Douglas, Bill Rassmusen, John Bardeen, Butch Arzikovic, and the other kids who lived in our neighborhood. We used the boulevard islands for football games and building snow forts for snowball battles. I also helped my mom & dad, Jim & Jo Lane, work on stuff for my dad's classes at the Central Office of the Unified School District on Northwestern Avenue across from the golf course during Summers when school was not in session. I attended Starbuck Junior High School on Ohio and many of those students lived close to us in West Racine. I was calling a number of girls and hanging out with them and their friends. I was a member involved in BEEYOP. I was a counselor at a Summer Camp near Plymouth, Wisconsin. I went to YMCA camp on Lake Cormorant, in Minnesota, close to our family Summer cottage on Lake Sally ten miles from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Most of my friends would have considered me a happy go lucky and always pulling some prank to get attention. One included raiding Horlick before the homecoming football game where I got the school flag from there gym and all the uniforms for the team, and making paper players put in Case High's lunch room in back of their Eagle and positioned strategically on Joan Of Arc near Park's library. I had to return the flag and uniforms to Horlick without getting caught before the school had us arrested and when I did with the other parties involved and as we were returning the stuff just as the football team in their sweats were hitting the practice field in the rain. As the team chased around the muddy field we tossed the uniforms out of a Volkswagen van as the players chased us we tossed the uniforms and flag out on to the muddy field as we made our getaway down the slope in to the road that led to Douglas Avenue and back to Park. The whole incident had started as a prank under the guise of the West Racine Cleaners bi annual flag cleaning. For those who don't remember the flag was a Confederate Army flag. It represented every thing I worked against during the Civil Rights Movement. While in the school to take the 40' by 20' flag we went through the locker room where we had found stickers reading: Park spelled backwards is Krap, the player's helmuts. So it was on and the helmut & uniforms were added to the confiscated items. Our homeroom teacher became aware of our law breaking actions and in order to save us from being expelled and put in jail gave us passes to give us time to return the gear and the flag. Needless to say if we had been caught there would have been serious consequences to answer to. That night at the game you could not read the numbers on the Horlick players uniform because of the mud on them. We won the game 26 to 0. Nothing like a little psychological warfare to overwhelm your opponent. Luckily no else found out that I was involved until my mom spilled the beans in 1978 at Thanksgiving dinner. Of course it was too late for anyone to do anything about it then so I really lucked out. Once I left Racine I went to UCLA before entering active duty in the USMC. I trained in Quantico & Langley during OCS then was stationed overseas in Quang Tri Province. After returning home I was last stationed in Jacksonville at the Naval Air Station as a Cross Country Chaser (Provost Marshall Service). I ended my military service at the rank of Captain before completing my required active duty. I had spent 4 years in USMC ROTC before entering active duty so I had no military service requirements upon my release from active duty. I spent most of my time hanging out with Duane Allman who was jammin' with, The Second Coming, Dickie Betts' band & the guys from the One Percent who later became Lynyrd Skynyrd. I joined a band from Tampa and went to LA to record their first album. We toured as a support act for the Allman Brothers & The James Gang until the Fall of 1971 when I left the band I was in (Blues Image) and joined the Carolina Band which featured Ed King & Artimus Pyle who later joined Lynyrd Skynyrd. Carolina stayed together replacing Ed King and continuing to tour as a support act for Skynyrd as a side deal for letting Ed leave the band to join Skynyrd. The band stayed together until Artimus left the band for Skynyrd in 1975. During this period I was involved both as an audio engineer and producer for a number of groups coming out of the South East & from England. I worked in Nashville, Memphis, Atlanta, Macon, Jacksonville, Tampa, Mia...Expand for more
mi, London, Los Angeles, Denver, Boulder, Vancouver, and in Austin through the late 1980's when I became involved with the revamped Bad Company. Since I had worked in the studio with them during the 1970's in England in the studio I was a natural choice for them when they reformed without Paul Rodgers. I also worked with Foreigner from their inception (1976) in the studio through the early 1990's. All together recording or performing and sometimes both on 112 albums from June 1970 to the present day. I attended UCLA in the 1970's completing Bachelor's Degree studies in Music and Film Production. I went back to UCLA in the mid 1980's and designed the current Recording Arts program and finished Master's Degree studies in Music, Audio Production, & Video Production. In the late 1990's I began to slow down a bit because of health issues and got married for a year but separated in September of 2000. I am now divorced but got the marriage annulled. I have lived between Nashville & Austin since the late 1980's. I lived in Jacksonville from November of 1988 to October of 1990 but made a number of trips back & forth to Nashville to keep busy musically. I moved back to Austin in 1990 and lived there for 5 years before moving to Atlanta to be close to my future wife and left shortly after she left the marriage in 2000 but not before recording & releasing a demo album co-produced by Steve Walsh of Kansas & using the Capricorn Rhythm Section that led to my being signed as a solo recording artist in 2002. I recorded the current album in Nashville in 36 hours in September of 2002. Released in May of 2003 just 4 days before I suffered a major heart attack after opening for Bruce Springsteen at the Gwinnett County Civic Center opening. All the plans for touring & promoting the album fell apart for more than six months before restarting in late 2003. Since then I have been touring lightly each year until another heart attack in 2005 sidelined me again. Doctors advised me then that I would need major spinal surgery to correct the Spinal Bone and Disc Disease as well as extreme Osteoarthritis in my spinal column then that had left me in a wheel chair since late 2003. Undergoing 31 separate surgeries over the next 4 years plus suffering another heart attack in June of 2007 made it difficult for us to tour. I had 2 STENTs implanted in 2003, 3 STENTs in 2005 and 5 more STENTs implanted in 2007. I was able to write a number of new songs during this time which has led to our new album of 15 songs & a 3 &1/2 hour DVD of the shows I did over this period which I hope will get released this Summer (2009) while Bleu Lane is on a 320 dates tour over a year & a half of touring around the world. The tour includes stops close to Racine (Madison, Milwaukee, Lacrosse, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Chicago & Saint Louis) and across the USA while jumping in to Canada, over to Europe, Russia, Southeast Asia, Turkey, Iraq, South America & Australia. I am here at this site to find friends I had in school and in the West Racine area where I grew up. I hope I can find them and become reconnected with them again. My story and life have been full of experiences including working in law enforcement to find the murderers of my fiance`, Joy Ochoa, in Southern California in the high desert area close to Palm Springs in late 1977. This led to me going around the USA to catch all those who had been involved with the murderers who were bad cops. Of the 2,800 arrested & convicted for various crimes against the states of California, Illinois, Georgia, Florida & the United States 15 of them decided not to be arrested among those were the bad cops who murdered my girlfriend. I was not sad about sending them off to meet God but to this day still have nightmares from this period of my life (1977 - 1982) which included being on the tour when the Skynyrd plane went down in Mississippi. I went back and forth from performing & recording to work the cases that led to the end of this program as the sheriff's department called it when on loan to the DEA we (my partner & I) brought to justice those who fled to the Caribbean Islands. It made me the person I am today. Tougher for the experience & training received in the Marine Corps, the sheriff's department, & the DEA. I would have gladly not to have had lived through such a nightmare but bringing to justice those involved made it possible for me to overcome any reservations I had in going after them. I would not wish the same experience on my worst enemy. Since then I have done so many recording sessions and toured around the world reaching places I would never have thought possible & really helped by the Internet over the period when my health was in question. I have set out on tour this year and plan to play for the next couple of years on the road while releasing both the new album & DVD to share with our fans, friends, & family. If anything I hope those who would remember me from Park High would have good thoughts & memories of me. I tried to be a good friend to those who did know me and would love to learn where their lives have taken them to. I came here specifically to try and find those friends and hopefully find some new ones. I also hope to hear from students who had my dad as a teacher at Park & Case high schools. He really made a difference in the lives of the people who he taught at each school & those he trained to be teachers. Among them many remained in Racine & taught at Park & Case. So when you read this drop us an email or a short note to let me know what is going on in your lives so I can share your experiences with those I already have. This is my story a& I sticking to it. (LOL) Hope to hear from some of you soon.
