William's Story

I graduated from VHS in 1965. I went to the South Bend College of Commerce to learn accounting. Alex Kazlauski and Wally Fetla were my roommates. GOOD TIMES! I then attended Ball State University and enrolled in the first class of the first time offered School of Architecture. I decided to go back to Valpo and work for the family business, Rouch' TV & Appliance Inc. After 21 years Penni (Smurdon) and I had the opportunity to start our own business in 1988, Vale Medical, Inc., selling STILLE surgical instruments, manufacture in Stockholm, Sweden to hospitals, plastic surgeons and micro hand surgeons. After training in Minneapolis, MN we were on our own. For the years 1989 and 1990, our little company was the top distributor of 17 STILLE surgical instrument distributors in the USA. Penni and I retired from the instrument business December 31, 2012. Penni and I retired at the same time, sold our home in Valpo and moved to Aiken, SC which is across the Savannah River at Augusta, GA where the Master's Golf Tournament is held. We have two sons. Bill Jr. is a very successful dentist in Evansville, IN. He has three children, Ellen, ...Expand for more
Glen and Willie. Jason is currently on special assignment with the DEA for one year, but actually works for Homeland Security as a Border Patrol officer. He has one daughter, Mackenzie Rose, who just turned one and she really loves her Daddy. 1983 was a special year for me as I was elected to become Master of Porter Masonic Lodge #137 in Valpo. Shortly after my term expired I became Secretary for the Board of Trustees for 27 years. My hobby is restoring a 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible. I bought it in 1980 and have worked on it almost every year for 36 years. It has 57,000 original miles and is completely stock. I restored it with the original 389 cu. in. motor with three two barrell carburetors known as Tri-Power, original 4 speed transmission, and is the factory correct color, platinum with a black interior. I have received several awards at the national level including the GTO Association of America and the Concourse d'Elegance at Hilton Head Island,SC Penni and I have traveled to Mazatlan, Mexico, Grenada, Jamaica, the eastern Caribbean as far as Barbados, Canada, South Korea and Bali, Indonesia. Life has been very good to us.
