William's Story

Hey, ya'll! I hope all who read this that knew me at Cole are well and happy, I hope that life has been good to you. Its been a few years (what's a few decades, right?), but I want to say that I look back at the years we spent together before we all went our separate ways into the world as truly excellent times, and I thank you, each and every one, separately and collectively, for some very fond memories. We were (and still are!) truly an exceptional class in a proud school. I went on to an Army career like you all expected, I spent my first four years as a Huey helicopter crewchief, then I transitioned into the Field Artillery (nuclear weapons: the Pershing Missile System) for 13 years, and then after the destruction of the last Pershing missile under the INF Treaty with the Soviet Union, I transitioned to another field for my last four years where I was a Platoon Sergeant in the Multiple Launch Rocket System, with a total of five tours of Germany. I retired in '96, and got educated as a gunsmith and started a business in Lawton, OK. I also still served the nation, performing federal Protective Security Officer security duties at various facilities in Oklahoma. I've been married and divorced one time each (no regrets!). I had plenty to keep...Expand for more
me busy there, but I still made it down to San Antonio to see family on a regular basis...and on occasion I went out to Ft. Sam to cruise past Cole and down memory lane. Now I've fast-forwarded to 2016, I've moved back to San Antonio (in 2012) to be with my family in these challenging times, and I'm trying to figure out how its possible to be busier than when I held down a regular job (lol). Again I've fast forwarded to 2021. I bought a house in Lawton, OK, and moved my 91 year old mother up here where the quality of life and timely access to health care is better. I made the move with a whirl of sadness. San Antonio was my family center since 1967, and I fell head over heels in love with it, the San Antonio of then was so different from the San Antonio of these modern times. I've heard it said that the only constant in life is change, and I can testify as to the truth in that, in my mind and heart I have not left S.A., S.A. has left me. The San Antonio I will always carry in my heart is the one that has you, my friends and classmates, and Robert G. Cole Jr-Sr High in it. Here's my best wishes to all of you...I wish you all fair winds and a following sea for your journey through this life...feel free to drop me a line sometime!--Bill
