William's Story

Life William Volk has over 20 years of design, technology, multimedia, and management experience. As an expert in user interface and system architecture, Mr. Volk has come up with some of the most acclaimed solutions to technology problems. Mr. Volk has also written articles for leading technical magazines, such as various Miller-Freeman publications, on issues of design, project management, and technology. Mr. Volk has had an enormous impact at the companies he has worked with, participating in re-organizations and strategic decision making that were critical to the survival and success of these companies. Mr. Volk began his career in 1979, at the age of 22, helping to launch the computer game division of a well established board game company, Avalon Hill. He authored three original game titles as well as establishing the quality assurance division and creating some of the first titles for the then new IBM PC. After completing a Masters in Physics and Computer Engineering in 1982, Mr. Volk was recruited for a division of Epson creating easy to use drawing software for their QX10 computer system. Eventually he became the West Coast Technical Manager and lead the Word Processor, Paint, Spreadsheet, and Drawing projects. In 1995 Mr. Volk co-founded Aegis Development, a pioneering firm in the area of multimedia and digital video production. At Aegis, he served as the VP of Development and oversaw the development of some of the first animation and video titling systems for personal computers. Mr. Volk also designed a drafting system that successfully won its market segment on the Amiga computer platform. y becoming the VP of Technology. Responsible for the development of the first CD-ROM Entertainment Project (The Manhole, 1989) and the ‘discovery’ of it’s talented authors (Rand and Robyn Miller), who would go on to create the best selling CD-ROM of all time (Myst). In 1990 Activision lost a major patent judgment and went through a Chap. 11. As the only previous senior manager retained, Mr. Volk helped to create the products that secured the company’s success, including the highly acclaimed “Return To Zork” who’s user-interface is still considered “best of breed.” At Lightspan, Mr. Volk created a process that enabled title production to go from an 18 month to 4 month cycle. His strategy of moving to the Sony Playstation after the collapse of the Interactive Television Market in 1995, and successful management of the conversion was a key to the survival of Lightspan. This lead to a successful IPO in Feb. 2000. Starting in 1995, Mr. Volk helped to design a secure on-line coupon system. In 1999 Mr. Volk joined Save.com as a full time founding CTO. Save.com is the first and only Internet company that allows users to print bar-coded grocery coupons that can be redeemed for cash. His understanding of the technology, security and interface issues was key to a successful launch in 1999. Mr. Volk is the founder and chairman of ZipProof, a patent-pending “soft proofing” (design approval) and collaborative software firm used by Print Shops from Colorado to Chile. In 2003 Mr. Volk directed the mobile application effort for Teknik Digital Arts. Currently Mr. Volk is the CEO of PlayScreen. Mr. Volk received his BA in Physics and Astronomy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1979, and a Masters in Physics and Computer Engineering from the University of New Hampshire in 1983.
