Winifred's Story

Life After marrying Harley Goldsworthy in 1965 and having a daughter Susan we picked up and moved to Hamilton (actually Stoney Creek) in 1966 when we came to visit a friend and Harley got a job. We stayed there for 4 years and then Harley was transferred to Kitchener. He was a mechanic for a construction rental outfit. We bought a house in New Hamburg - half way between Kitchener and Stratford - and have lived at the same address all these years. We have two children Susan and Terry, both married, and 5 grandchildren. Harley retired last spring and is currently driving a van making last minute deliveries to we never know what tomorrow will bring. updating this in 2014 - We lost our daughter to cancer in 2009. Although we won't have any more grandchildren we are now the proud great grandparents of a wonderful 18 month year old boy and waiting for a new arrival in the spring. Harley and I are both officially retired and enjoy travelling and seeing new places. updating this in 2017 - We are now enjoying our 2 great grandchildren and following the grandchildren around. The oldest lives in Woodstock (about 1/2 hour away) and the youngest in Cambridge in grade 9. #3 grandchild is in college studying massage therapy and #4 grandchild thinks she wants to be an auto mechanic. Life continues to be exciting and we all thank the Lord for continued good health. Workplace Working for the construction company that built Rothesay Paper put me in the construction environment. ved to Stoney Creek I worked for the building commissioner for the Township. When we moved to New Hamburg I worked as a fill in for maternity leave at a lumber yard and from connections there I was employed at a mid-size construction company in the industrial/commercial sector. Thirty years has seen me rise from payroll clerk to secretary to office manager. As my husband has retired, I may soon follow suit and travel with him on his truck runs. I officially retired in 2009 and have been spending my time knitting and crocheting which I donate to the local resource center and working on church committees. 2019 was a year of change for our family. Harley had a massive brain bleed the end of May and was in a rehab facility for a month. Although he has no physical problems it did leave him with aphasia which means his words often get jumbled and he has trouble understanding new concepts. For example #2 granddaughter is going to college to get her TA certificate. She is on a co-op program which means she has classroom experience 2 days a week. She has been staying with us as we are closer to her placement but Harley doesn't understand she doesn't get paid for the days she is at that school and she still has to go to school herself the other 3 days. The rest of the family is doing well and we are learning to cope with this new problem. It is frustrating that I am the only driver and Harley is hoping he will get his licence back but I don't see that happening in the near future.
