Wolfgang's Story
Life
After Forest Heights, I briefly worked with mainframe computers before going to school at U of Penn. in Philadelphia. A bad motorcycle wreck in Ohio sidelined me there for a year 71-72, and I then opted to finish my University degree at Whittier College outside of LA in California. My Masters was at Cal State LA in Journalism, and for about 7 years I lived in Newport Beach and worked as a stringer for several magazines and dailies. Several writing trips to Europe, a number of failed relationships and two almost marriages later, I wound up living in Dana Point, a harbor town about 75 miles south of LA. When not in school or working, I did a lot of sailing, mostly to Catalina or the Channel Islands, or down to Mexican ports like Ensenada or Cabo San Lucas and skiing the local mountains. The High Sierras and the Utah badlands are also close enough to get to easily for skiing, camping, rafting and mountainbiking. I went back to college to get my nursing degree and wound up working ER in a very busy trauma center in Orange County for about 10 years. Another almost marriage. Then in 1991, I decided to move up to Santa Monica (where I live now) and go to school and work at UCLA. I work in the Neuro-Trauma ICU as an RN and also participate in the many research projects that are going on there at any given time. Writing is still a passion for me...Expand for more
(remember that silly diatribe I wrote surreptitiously in the Sierra Silva advocating a strike and comparing our principal to Hitler?) and I wrote 2 failed plays, a number of successful short stories. Working as a set nurse for many of the TV and movie productions going on around LA, both on set and on location, is a lot of fun(Schwarzenegger shoots involved a lot of burns from special effects, while location shoots in the local deserts and mountains often mean a lot of dehydration) and I also have done some medical script consulting for medical accuracy with shows that involve nursing . I have immensely enjoyed my 40 years in California, but have lately been thinking of moving back to so. Ontario to be closer to my aging parents, who still live in the KW area and who I visit at least yearly. Leaving southern California will be a hard thing to do though, with it's almost year-round summer weather and the 40 year's worth of friends I will be leaving behind.
In 2008, I had spinal surgery for a work-related injury and decided it was time to take retirement from UCLA. My father was undergoing cancer treatments and surgery so in September of 2009, I moved back to Ontario with 40 years worth of things and my 2 cats Elvis and Kobe. I am presently living on a farm a few miles outside of Guelph and readjusting to all things Canadian, including winter.
