Woody's Story

Hello friends and acquaintences. I have often felt cheated when I have gone to a classmates profile and found they've not provided any info about the last 40+ years during which a lot of stuff, good and bad, has probably happened to them. I felt cheated because I would have liked to rejoice with them for the good stuff and empathized/sympathized with them when they encountered roadblocks and troubles in their lives. I recently realized I have no right to feel cheated since I have never written much about myself. So with this message I challenge others to break the silence on their own life stories. I'll start with a chronology about where I've lived since 1967. After graduation from GW, I went to the University of Richmond and graduated with a BS in Math, Physics, and Sociology. I then attended Fla State University and received an MS degree. I had planned on continuing at FSU to get a PhD with concentrations in Demography and Statistics. THat plan had to be put aside when I contracted a serious illness. Health Insuance as a Graduate student, even on Fellowship, was inadequate to address my medical needs at that time. So out of necessity I had to leave grad school and take a position with C&P Telephone Co. in Roanoke,VA. This is where our only children were born. We named our twin sons Chris and Grayson. After spending a few years in Roanoke, C&P moved the family to Richmond. We lived in Brandermill and very much enjoyed our 8 years there. When our time there was over, C&P moved us to Virginia Beach. I enjoyed my assignments while there, and met some great people there as well. After only 3 years of beach life, the company moved us yet again. THis time to NorthernVirgina. This was our least enjoyable location. Luckily after a little over 2 years, we had the opportunity to move to Plano, TX (suburb of Dallas) in conjunction with a change in employment to MCI. My eight years in Texas were much fun and quite rewarding. In early 1998, MCI relocated us to Northern VA. After a couple of years,I left MCI. THis happened about 5 months after MCI's merger with WorldCom that was headed up by the infamous Bernie Ebbers. Both my sons went to work at MCI after their college graduations, and while I was till with MCI. One of them still works for the current version of MCI/worldcom. If you are unaware, Bell Atlantic bought Wordcom/MCI after they had merged with GTE and NYNEX. Wow! I have a headache from all that and I'm not sure how I got onto that tangent. Enough of the history of Telecommuications and the Traylor family. Woops! One final telecom relationship to share. After I left MCI/Worldcom, I went to work for a couple of Telecom start-ups as VP of Regulatory and Legal Affairs. Both of the start-ups had great success in their very early stages, but they both utimately went bankrupt with about 95% of similarly focused companies around 2000-01. My wife of 39 years, Pat Howard Traylor (GW '65, UR'9) and I currently live in Ashburn, VA. Ashburn is in Loudoun County which is either the #1 or #2 fastest growing counties in the US. We are about halfway between Dulles aiport and Leesburg, VA. Both our sons live in Richmond. Grayson and his brother Chris are 35 years old. CHris and his wife of a little over 4 years have just had their first child, and coincidentally our first grandchild. Evan Kane Traylor was born this past July. I beieve you can see a decent picture of him and me elsewhere on this site. (Note the proper ue of pronouns in the previous sentence. THe incorrect use of pronouns really irritates me. It's as if people believe "I" in place of "me" is more formal. But there again, I digress.) I'll close now with the things that have taken up most our energies, our thoughts, our focus, and indeed, our whole live for the past 10 years or so. I previously mentioned a health issue derailing my path toward a PhD. THat problem was ulcerative colitis which began d...Expand for more
uring grad school. Almost inexplicably, that illness went into remission in 1982 or so, and has not recurred. Obviously, Pat and I have counted our blessings many times for this surprising outcome. However, around 1992 I began having neurologically based problems with balance, leg and hand numbness & weakness. Diagnosis was quite difficult, but my Doctors thought they discovered the cause when an MRI showed a compression fracture in my spine which put pressure on my spinal cord. After several surgeries and unpleasant recoveries, we all thought this had been the silver bullet and any residual symptoms could be blamed on the spinal cord injury itself. After the 3rd & final surgery in '94, I improved slowly over the next few years. I remained active and employed. I traveled a considerable amount (one year I had about 300,000 domestic air miles). Pat and I traveled to Mexico, Canada, St Maarten, Barbados, St THomas, London (separately, Pat with her mother on a tour of Europe, me for a speaking engagement). and most of the major cities in the US. Despite some continuing issues seemingly carried over from the back surgeries, I felt nothing new was going on. By 1998, I had developed enough old and new symptoms to be convinced something else was going on. After a couple of years of many Doctors, mostly neurologists, I was finally given a couple of tests that led to the conclusion that I had Multiple Sclerosis (MS). In fact, my Dr. called me with my diagnosis the day before my sister, Diane Henry, passed away. She died of Cancer but had MS for about 30 years. My Drs. concluded I have Primary Progessive MS which is encountered less than the more prevalent form of MS which is relapsing-remitting MS. (As another tangent, Pat and I are quite amused when the Drs. on the TV program House always seem to mention MS as a possible diagnosis for virtually every patient.) As a result of this diagnosis and the continued worsening of symptoms, I finally retired on disability in May of '01. Since then, I have continued to worsen in symptoms. For instance, when I retired I used a cane to assist me in walking. I am now prety much wheelchair-bound. I am able to walk a few step with a rolling walker, transfer to/from bed, bath, car,and chairs. And thoughout all of this, my wife has been right with me, to help when I drop my keys, help to get me up when I fall, & help with a thousand other things which I had always taken for granted. Before I contracted MS, I'm sure I was difficult enough to live with. Add in the MS and its effects, I'm just not sure how Pat has been able to persevere, but I pray thanks to God that she is here to help & love me everyday. I don't want to give the impression that everything in my life has come up "craps". I have counted myself so very lucky to have found and maried Pat when I did, that we had two wonderful boys who have made us proud more times than can be counted, that I had a somewhat successul career doing something I most of the time enjoyed, that I now have a precious healthy grandson, and many more things too numerous to mention here. I hope I've not bored anyone who has taken time to read this. I promise to write again about the more positive aspects of the life I've had. Please take up the challenge I laid down up front and write something you want to share with us all. I have found this to be rather cathartic for me and you may find that if you need such a thing, it might provide something good for you as well. Woody Traylor GW'67 UR'71 FSU'73 BTW, if you notice my favorite outdoor activities, I originally had checked nothing because MS stopped the activities I did enjoy. So, I fudged a bit by listing stuff I used to do (e.g., tennis, golf, basketball, volleyball, football(touch of course), and coaching youth basketball, football and baseball). Now, I enjoy watching these activities and trying to remember the times when I could participate.
