Wrick's Story
Will. I'm retired from the Army, Post Office and Social Security. I have 5 children, 2 Daughters and 3 Sons. I have 9 grandchildren 5 boys and 4 girls. I am single and enjoying retirement. I was married to Karen Hoover, Class of 1967 Central HS.
I am divorced, non-drinker but I'm a smoker. Basically I enjoy my children and grandchildren. I love reading and fishing. After retiring from the Army, I bought a house in Barnhart, MO in 1989 then I sold it in 2006 and moved close to a Daughter in Rockingham, NC I didn't like the Eastern Diamondback Rattle Snakes and the fire ants, so I moved and bought a house in Herculaneum, MO.
While in Rockingham, one day. I was BBQ'ing and 2 Cowboys in a pick-em-up truck drove into my driveway and came up asking permission to hunt on my property, I said no way, I have a daughter and grandsons living only 50 yards away. "No Shooting". They laughed and said we catch Diamondbacks alive, no weapons, we always have good luck hunting here. I told them to knock their socks off and if they needed more burlap bags I'll go buy some. I remember more than once, watching my son-in-law and my sons flying around mowing the grass (on riding mowers), I have seen them jump off, running and yelling and brushing themselves off. They had run over Fire Ant Mounds. The mounds are a few feet deep underground and they build them up a foot above ground. They sting badly, it hurts feels like fire. ...Expand for more
They are slowly moving up north, believe me, we are not going to like having fire ants for company. Along with the killer bees, they both are bad news
One day my grandson Charlie was about 7 or 8 and was riding his bike wearing only a pair of short shorts. Well he tripped and fell on a fire ant mound. He was screaming and crying, I brushed him off and took him to the emergency room. He was stung all over, they had even gotten into his underware and bite him good. The Nurses were laughing and carrying on. Well, I took them nurses out in the hallway and told them that if they think it is so fuuny they can come with me. Take their pants off and sit on a fire ant mound themselves. I told them to get back in there and help old Charlie out, instead of making fun at him.
When I got home, I was still mad at those fire ants. I took my broom stick and shoved it deep into the fire ant mound, well I tell you. They came up that broom stick Madder than hell, I left. Later that night I went back out with a can of gas and poured it all over and into that mound. I light a match and good lord there was a va-voom and I blew a lot of those fire ants right up and on me. I never did that again. Then I had neighbors telling me that I was foolish. I was on well water and if you use gas or chemicals, they can leach into the ground and get into your well water. Now, I have a policy, if they leave me alone, I will leave them alone..
