Wyatt's Story
You knew me as Wyatt, the tallest (6'7"), skinny kid in school. But growing up with that name was tough. Remember the Moron jokes? One of them was, 'Why did the Moron put a bucket in front of the TV? Answer: so he could watch Wyatt Earp.' So, for the last 46 years I've been known as "Tex"; because I wear Western Clothes and a Cowboy Hat. After High School I sought employment in the Oil Fields, literally going out to a Rig and approaching the Supervisor. Before I could say anything, he looked up and said, "Are you looking for work, Tex?" I said in a slow drawl, "Yup". So he hired me, right on the spot. He said, "What's your name?" I said "Tex"; he didn't know he had just renamed me and the look on his face; you could have knocked him over with a feather.
The job in the Oil Fields didn't last long(Thank God), but it eventually led me into the Heavy Equipment Business, both Industrial and Agricultural. Over a period of 20 years I wound up working for a Manufacturer in Houston, while I lived in Portland, Oregon and covered all 50 states and 7, Provinces of Canada. Since we had an old, Hunting & Fishing Lodge, built from hand-hewn logs on the Sandy River, near Portland, I wasn't anxious to move to Houston, Texas to take the job. So I explained to my new employer that we had a perfectly good Airport in Portland. That job was to cover the whole country and where I lived should be of no consequence. So I told them I could fly out of Portland just as well as Houston. Thank goodness they went along with it, because even though I go by "Tex", I didn't want to move to Texas. Going there, to the office, once a month was plenty for me (Too much humidity). As a result, I have already done all the Traveling I will ever want to do. Gratefully, I got that out of my system before 9-11; with all the resultant security and long lines nowadays. I would not want to travel that much, now. I flew so much, as it was, I knew most of Flight attendents on a first name basis. I enjoyed it, at the time, and had the opportunity to spend quite a bit of time in each state. Let me just say, all States are not created equal.
Somewhere in the middle of being in the Machinery Business, I wound up writing & producing Radio & TV Commercials. It was as much entertainment for me as it was a money making venture. At the time I was covering the Northwest in the Heavy Equipment busines...Expand for more
s and to be 300 miles from home and hear my own voice coming out of the Dashboard always surprised me. I sent the Commercial Tapes out and they went to a Distributor and where they went from there, I had no idea. So I never knew where or when I was going to hear them. Like I said, that was the entertainment end of it for me.
On another subject, I must like being married because I have been there three times. I have three children with my first wife, although they aren't children anymore; they are Robby 36, Greg, 41 and Kimry, 43. They all live in Bakersfield, near my first wife, who you knew as Mary Perkins. We were married 12 years. She has been a good mother.
I've been married 17 years to my third wife Teri, her/our Son, John is 42, lives in Maryland and has two children, Aubrey and Owen and life is good for all of us. We live in the farming country, outside Phoenix, Az and have been here for 17 years. Teri loves horses and has a Thorobred named Samuel, who is a retired Race Horse and the Great Grand Son of "Secretariat." Too bad he didn't give us some of his "winnings". We raise English Bulldogs.
For the last 24 years, I have been in Construction. Now I am the Chief Estimator and Project Manager for a medium sized Utility Contractor. I love my work. My work ethic is best described as, "If you love your work, you'll never have to work a day in your life". Of course the key is to find the type of work that you look forward to doing. In that regard, I've been very blessed. God is Good and I owe it all to him. He has blessed me with answered prayer countless times. Enough that His existence is irrefutable to me. To say I couldn't make it without Him would be a gross understatement.
Admittedly, I never thought I would live this long and fortunately I always wanted to be older. Well, I got that wish also, I'm older! But I still wear my Cowboy Hat. Although, for a while, I had a bumper sticker which read, "I'm not a Cowboy, I just found the Hat!" My favorite Bumper sticker was "I may be getting Older but I refuse to grow up... and you can't make me!"
Live life to the fullest, be thankful for what God has given you and try to leave the world better than you found it. Granted, that is not an original "saying", but it works great as a guidline.
Let me know how you have been doing, I'd love to hear from you.
Best regards,
Wyatt "Tex" Goodwin
