Yolanda's Story
After High School, I started working for a dental office in Gilroy, where I worked for 24 yrs. First as a registered dental assistant, and then moving on up to the front desk as a receptionist. My last 10 years in that office, I was the office manager. During that time, I married my husband Roel (Roy) Garza in 1988. We just celebrated our 25th anniversary, and are still very much in love, and very dedicated to one another and living the dream life. We have no children, but ton's of nieces and nephews, and now grand nieces/nephews, and one great grand niece.
I left my job in Gilroy in 1999, and switched to a dental office in Morgan Hill where I worked for another 10 years as a receptionist and treatment coordinator. My husband worked at Gentry's and Gilroy Foods for 34 yrs. We had been trying to decide when/where we should retire, when we went to Maine on vacation to visit my sister-in-law and niece in Oct. 2009. We fell in love with the area, and bought a house, much to our bosses, friends, coworkers and families surprise. We moved to Maine in July 2010, just 2 wks before my niece gave birth to her daughter. We love the area, the friends we have made and have bonded with our little grand niece Bella who just turned 3. My husband is semi-retired doing odd jobs for neighbors and an occasional side job for staples, assembling office furniture. I work part time (16 hrs/wk) from ho...Expand for more
me for a Precious Metals company, making calls to dental offices, while wearing my PJ's and watching the snow quietly drift down in front of my window. I also help babysit little Bella, who is such a joy to hang out with.
We love to travel, having gone several times to Mexico in recent years, and I was fortunate to go to Russia, Ukraine and Amsterdam in 1994 for 18 days. We have also driven cross country twice, and to several of the New England states checking out the surrounding areas. We are hoping to go to Canada next year and Spain & Italy in the next couple of years.
I often wonder what has happened to all of the people that I went to school with. In the past I ran into an occasional person around town, when I still lived in Gilroy. The last 5 years or so that we lived there, it seemed Gilroy had really begun to grow and it was strange to go to the movies and not recognize a single person, or go to Walmart and only recognize one or two people. So, now that we live in Maine, it doesn't feel as strange as I thought it would, not recognizing anyone at the movies or the store. It's been 3 years now, and I know just enough people, so that I don't feel like a total stranger, but not enough to feel like everyone is getting into my business. I do visit my family yearly, so maybe one of these days when I'm out and about in Gilroy, you'll recognize me and say "Hey, I remember you!"
