Yolanda's Story

I don't recall much when turning in my cap & gown at graduation because I believe I had a seizure. I heard later other students thought I was on drugs, but that was not the case then or now with exception to medications that are prescribed. Funny how a lifelong medical condition could be misinterpreted. Anyway, I had a daughter who is a grown up now and does computer support ( IT) for a large company. I took classes part time, weekends, nights, some afternoon classes while I worked. Eventually I managed to enter into the field of Food Service Sciences/Management and Nutrition Dietetics followed by Labor Studies. I had worked as a Food Service Supervisor/Dietetic Assistant, then onto work as a Dietetic Technician in Pediatrics inpatient at UCSF for over 15 years. I was President of a Statewide Union and did a leave of absence from UCSF to work as Executive Director of our Employee Union for just over a year and resigned to go back to UCSF until 1997. My biggest claim to 15 minutes of fame (so to speak) was a personal invitation to meet and dine at the WhiteHouse by personal invitation of President Clinton and Mrs. Hilary Rodham Clinton. After RSVP and providing necessary documents for security clearance the event took place in the fall of his !st year in office. As a guest I was part of a countrywide team of Latino Labor Coalition Board Members/Leaders who worked on getting out the vote. It was a different experience to be attending the WhiteHouse as a guest and to be served cocktails and sit in chairs in the Blue Room and Red Room and Grand BallRoom and so much more...Expand for more
and yes I pocketed WhiteHouse cocktail napkins in full view of the secret service... Back to more bio: at times I held 2 jobs(Bartender and Cocktail Waitress while putting myself through school) and did field work without pay to satisfy requirements and gain experience and extended this working experience for a paid stipend in order to further my work experience. I ended up bringing up my daughter as a single parent when her father and I split up. I miss the city at times, but it is so expensive to live there.I have always enjoyed arts and crafts and was in the Arts Club while at Mission High and featured in a club photo in the 1971 yearbook. I enjoy jewelry collecting mainly vintage and other and do some of my own jewelry.I still enjoy a wide array of friendships and acknowledge some memory lapses from my high school years- could be a result of all the clashes with the sidewalk/concrete when I had those episodes of passing out. Life has been a struggle at the leanest of times yet I always had goals that I worked diligently to realize. I have known my husband for around 23 plus years and we have been married for around 16 years and we dated for 6 plus years with the bay bridge between us. We have a Lab mix dog who is a our guy. I will work towards getting up a photo or 2 or ??? Well you will see ??. I don't have grandchildren, but I have a senior grandcat - yes my daughter has a cat that is getting up there in years. Well that is enough for now. ps. I lost my yearbooks while moving years ago so I may need a refresher with regards to how other classmates knew me.m
