Yvette's Story

Hello everyone, my name is yvette (warren) wilkinson and I went to Selma Highschool from 1972-73 and 1973-74. My family was military there at the air force base and I rode a bus from the AF base to school that our parents paid for so we could attend. My first year at Selma Highschool I was very much in love with another military brat named Blake Lofton Donald and we rode together to school in his blue vw. We hung out together almost the entire day going to most of the same classes, driving home together and then meeting up again after school on the AF base. I was also friends with Gail miller whom I still stay in contact with and she works in the Selma hospital ER as an RN now. I was also friends with Lisa Tacconi but I haven't seen or heard from her since she left the college in Florence that we all three attended at the university of n. Alabama in Florence, al. After I graduated from Highschool I moved to Pensacola, Florida for the summer and worked and played there until my parents insisted I come back home because I was only 17 at the time. I started in the nursing program at the univ. of n. Alabama in the fall of 1974 and joined the sorority phi Mu and the drill team which performed at football half times. I didn't make it to graduation because I moved from there to Rhein mien Germany where my parents were stationed in 1975-76 and married my first husband there, the marriage only lasted for eight years but produced my first born son James Harold Mylott IV . We divorced in 1984 during the year I was in Lpn school for nursing. I graduated as an LPN , remarried to Allen r. Wilkinson whom I've been married to now for the past 28 years and we had two more sons. In aug. 3-1985 Stephen Allen wilkinson was born at the shaw AF base hospital. Jimmy had been born at the Tuomey hospital of Sumter, s.c. Because both husbands were stationed at shaw AF base at the times of our marriages. We were living in base housing at shaw AF base when I became pregnant for a third time when we received orders to move to Misawa, Japan where in feb. 17-1987 our third son Christopher Michael wilkinson was born at the Misawa a.f.b. hospital Japan. We had a wonderful five years there in Japan and I'd still be living there if they would have let me stay. I worked as a nurse in the Misawa a.f.b. hospital during our five years there and then we moved again in nov. 1991 to Goldsboro, n.c. To Seymour a.f.b. where I worked for awhile in their military hospital in the L&D department. My husband was being sent TDY to places all over the world from every base we were stationed at so there was a lot of times I was raising my son's alone. I believe it was during desert storm when we lived at Seymour Johnson a.f.b. that he was sent. We lived in base housing there also and you knew who's husbands were gone at the time by all the yellow ribbons on the houses and trees. From Seymour Johnson we moved to Belleville Illinois to Scott a.f.b. and it was there that we had our first home built. It was a beautiful two story home with a large backyard, and about 3,500 sq ft. Of living space including a full basement. We always enjoyed living in base housing but to be bake to move into your own first house was wonderful! We stayed at Seymour for about six years and during that time my husband earned his bachelors degree in computers that was paid in full by the a.f. Then we moved back to shaw a.f.b. in 2001 where my husband retired from the a.f. After earning his masters degree thanks again to the a.f. Generosity. My husband was offered a civil serv...Expand for more
ice GS-12 position doing the very same job he did in the military but as a civilian. He never even changed desks! He was a very, very lucky man to receive such a great job offer during the times we find ourselves in now. Jobs are scarce around Sumter, s.c. And if you manage to get a job around here the pay is usually so bad you couldn't afford to support a family on it. So we feel truly blessed to have the jobs we have. My husband continues to work for the a.f. Through his civil service job at shaw a.f.b. and I've worked several different nursing jobs over the past 11years. I get restless I guess, I'm used to moving every 3-5years with the a.f. Being a military brat myself so I change jobs every few years. My parents live here in Sumter also because my father retired from shaw also with the a.f. And my mother retired from civil service both from shaw a.f.b. years ago. They live in an absolutely beautiful two story home on three acres of landscaped property. My oldest son jimmy lives in Goldsboro, n.c. With his wife and one year old daughter Christina. Jimmy has his own heating and air conditioning business there and they live in their very first home there. Jimmy's wife Marrianne graduated from college as a social worker and is working also. My middle son Stephen has been very busy giving me grandsons while attending nursing school here with his fiancé Caitlin. Stephen has a five year old son named Stephen dexter wilkinson that he had with his ex-wife and a one year old son named Owen Michael that he had with his fiancé Caitlin. My youngest son Christopher Michael wilkinson graduated from coastal university in Mrytle beach, s.c. As is currently working as a day trader while continuing his education for his masters degree. He has a very bright and beautiful young lady friend whom he has been seeing for the past six years named Emily and she graduated with a degree in marine biology. Emily is currently seeking employment in her field of study but it's very difficult to find decent jobs out there these days. So, there you have it! I keep in touch with my best friend georgette Keaton whom I went to the univ. of n. alabama with in 1974 and she is still doing great working as a counselor for the admitting office at the univ. of Texas in San Antonio, Texas. Georgette and her husband Stan who is an ex-a.f. Officer drove back to the univ. of n. Alabama a few years ago and met up with my husband and I and our grandson dexter to remember our college days! It was a lot of fun but I remember that college as being a lot bigger the first time we were there. I never got to finish my dreams of being an a.f, flight nurse but I did finally go back to Lpn school at Tuomey hospital in Sumter, s.c. I've been working as an LPN nurse for a little over 28years now and loving it. Maybe someday I'll be able to finish my BSN in nursing but if not that's o.k. Too because I've had a really wonderful life! I discovered that you don't ever have to give up your dreams but sometimes you have to change them a little in order to have it all! I have a career I love and a family I wouldn't change for the world. So I'd say that I'm very blessed! And my life isn't over yet so who knows, there might still be a BSN in my future! With the computer age we are able to complete degrees from the comfort of our own homes now. It's been a very long time since Highschool and even though at 55 some people would think its time to start slowing down but guess what? I'm not some people!Ha!Ha! It's been great remembering all of you!
