Yvonne's Story
Hi
I've been doing a lot after graduating from Tech. As some of youknow I spent my freshman year of college at the Peabody Conservatory of Music. I spengt one year there and than transferred to Catholic University. I graduated from there in 1972 with a Bachelors degree. I spent the next several years teaching with the D.C. Youth Orchesstra Program and teaching privately at home. I moved to NY in tne Fall of 1978. I started working on a Master's Degree at Brooklyn College, My major was percussion instruments. I had a great time at Brooklyn. I really strarted to play really well. My Mother and sister had been living in NY for several years before I moved here. My Mother is a professional singer and my sister recieived a schholarship to study at the Ju illiard School. I mention this because we formed a performing group The Longar Ebony Ensemble Ltd. negie Recital Hall and have been doing concerts ever since. We have performed in NY, the Midwest, Washington D.C. and in Paris France. I started a percussion program at the Harlem School of the Arts where I worked from 1979 until 2001. They had no instruments. I am proud to say that when I left the school they had a full complement of percussion instruments, 4 tympani, xylophone, marimba, several drumsets, 2 vibraphones and an assortment of other percussion instruments. I have done a lot of playing with a lot of different groups in the city and played with Dance Theater of Harlem. Because of the economy I started working in the PS system here as a music teacher.
That is what I am doing a present and continue to perform with my family and others groups. I was able to get another Master's degree in Ele mentary Education. That is what I am doing at present and enjoying life.
