Susan's Story
After graduating from BHS, I graduated from UCB, then worked in a great variety of jobs over several years. I moved to Maine about thirty years ago or so, and after a while, went back to school to study acupuncture in FL and the UK. I've been a Five-Element acupuncturist for twenty years now, and truly love my work. In the course of things, I have done some relief work with Acupuncturists Without Borders and helped found the Portland Veterans' Acupuncture Clinic. In my free time, I switch to bigger needles and sew all manner of sheepskin hats & mittens and a variety of deerskin products to sell at occasional craft shows, or in one of my treatment rooms that I convert to this purpose around the holidays. I also love to raise veggies in my small garden. I have found it wise to share some of my tomatoes with the guy across the street, who is crazy about them. A couple of years ago, after thirty-five years together, my partner and I married, two hours after it became legal for us to do so. We are happy campers. Have always been so, actually.
Portland is a great place to live, even if the sun doesn't seem to know about setting into the ocean - I am becoming reconciled to the sunrise instead, even if it doesn't feel quite right. Portland has everything I ever loved about Berkeley, plus it has parking places.....available parking places. Also, there's a beautiful bay full of islands, great food, a rich history, and an increasingly delightful mix of wonderful people from all over the world, very active arts scene, liberal politics - despite the governor.
There's a sign folks see soon after crossing the border into Maine on the turnpike: "Welcome to Maine - The Way Life Should Be". That pretty much sums it up.
