Abby's Story

Life Hi. I am married living in Kansas with my husband, my almost 3 year old daughter, and my teenage stepson. Life is good here, slower paced than New York, but I still get back to New York at least once a year to visit friends and family. My parents still live in the same house, so that's nice. There are lots of things to do in Manhattan, with the university here, plus Topeka (40 mins east), Lawrence (75 mins east, plus my in-laws live there) and Kansas City (2 hours east) all have plenty to do and see! The outlying communities are neat too, so there's a nice balance. College After graduating from High School, I did a year at Cobleskill, then transfered to Potsdam College (SUNY) where I got my Elementary certification and English degree. I knew I wouldn't be able to find a teaching job easily so I decided to plow on and get my (required) master's. I took a few months, then started working on my M. Ed at Kansas State University the fall of '94. I graduated May of 97. Now as a result of a job I have, I returned to school and got my Early Childhood Special Education license. Hopefully I'll take a break from school for a while, but somehow I don't think I'm completely done. The idea of library science sounds appealing too, so maybe someday... : -) Workplace After moving to Kansas, I got some non-teaching jobs for a while to pay for Grad School. Finally, I took a position teaching in the Child Development Center at a Job Corps center. From there I was able to get a position teaching an At Risk Pre-K class for the Manhattan School District. I was a victim to budget cutbacks b...Expand for more
efore I could get tenure, but all worked out well because I was able to get hired on to teach a school distrct Early Childhood Special Ed class for Geary County Head Start in Junction City. An employee of the school district, but contacted out to Head Start - all the benefits. REALLY enjoyed that job - working with the little ones, helping the families, and managed to stay in that position long enough to get tenure with the school district. From there I was hired to a Lead Teacher position for a year for an At-Risk Pre-K class that the district was just starting. Again, really enjoy working with the kids and the families. You know when something begins to turn around for the kids or families that you can be proud that you helped with the situation! I think I'm destined to this type of position... : -) Due to my completion of the ECSE license the Special Ed department grabbed hold of me again and placed me in a true Early Childhood Special Ed classroom. A morning and an afternoon class; three, four and five year olds, 7 children with an IEP for some disability and then 7 peer models (considered typically developing). This job has been among the most challenging because of the severity of some of my disabilities, but as always the kids keep me coming back day after day! In case you are interested, my school district has a website Geary County USD 475 that you could look up and find me under Jefferson Elementary. Unfortunately, there is no picture but it's a way to make contact if you're interested. fyi my name at school is actually Abigail. They've got it wrong on the address.
