Al(Alfred)'s Story
Life
I'm married and have two children--Ann 27 and Ben 23. After graduating from Arkansas State U., I taught in Blytheville for a semester and then moved to Washington, D.C. I got a job at the Library of Congress in 1970 where I worked for 31 years. I was a supervisory reference librarian in the Congressional Research Service for 21 years. I retired on November 2, 2001, when I hit 55. I live in Upper Marlboro, Maryland--20 miles East of Washington, D.C. my wife, Sharon, of 33 years, who is retired Library of Congress children's literature cataloger, and one dog and two cats. My children have finally moved out and are on their own. Ann is an nurse and lives in Annapolis, Maryland. Ben is currently unemployed and living at home.
College
I received a BA from Arkansas State University, majoring in History, in August, 1969. I earned a MA in Business Administration from Central Michigan University in December, 1979.

nts in Greensboro, NC. I sold Fiats with my brother Ed and did sub work in Maryland schools for 7 months. I finally got a job at the Library of Congress as a "Searcher, Filer, Editor" in the National Union Catalog Div. and worked there for 2 years. I then moved to the Congressional Reference Div., which provides Congress with requested information from members and staff, of the Congressional Research Service. I spent 29 years in CRD, moving up from a Technical Information Specialist handling document and government questions, to Reference Librarian dealing with queries concerning the Middle East, general foreign relations, military and U.S. history, and veterans' affairs. In '80 I was promoted to Supervisory Reference Librarian and supervised the day to day operations of small reference libraries, first in the Longworth House Office Building and finally in the Rayburn House Office Building. The jobs in CRD were interesting and often very challenging. After 9-11, however, working on Capitol Hill lost its appeal, so I retired as soon as I became eligible.
