Al's Story

Graduated from Penn State in '87. 20 years as an Officer of US Marines (Combat Arms / Airborne). Was paid to assail the world and break stuff. Stepped foot on every continent except Antarctica. Totally Based. Not Woke! Not Broke! Was stationed (PCS) on the East Coast, West Coast, some fu__ing US Army Post (twice), Hawaii and Okinawa, Japan. Felt like I had TAD Orders around the world considering all the deployments and assignments. Fought and avoided being assigned to a duty station in Wash D.C. Lifetime member of the VFW. They didn't kill me! 2o22 - Just finished a 15 year gig at NASA supporting spaceflight/spacecraft hardware development, sub-orbital atmospheric and bio-science spaceflight payload projects. It was fun, but if you stay at a government organization like that for too long, it will give you Stockholm Syndrome. NASA has world class branding, but absolutely ,terrible discipline. They didn't kill me either. 2022 - Took a short sabbatical to wrench on the Harleys. (Edit Change 2022): Decided to quit being scooter trash and end my short sabbatical. Accepted an interesting position as Stanford University faculty supporting High Energy Physics research projects at a DOE National Lab. NASA provided an opportunity to build hardware for exploring outer space, and now the current gig is focused on building large complex facilities and hardware to explore innerspace at the Itsy bitsy teenie weenie scale. I wish the very best to the few people I connected with at Old Mill.. Old Mill was the 4th High School I attended, so I kind of..... sort of.... remember some of you as people specific to Old Mill. Except for a couple of very special nice young ladies, I mostly remember the rest of you by just your first names; primarily from math classes or the Cross Country and Track teams. As with many of us, my yearbook was lost in some move to some faraway place. Most likely, I remember so few of you because I chose not to be social with the vast majority of you outside of school hours, and spent most of my time in Glenn Burnie, Spa Creek in Annapolis or weekends partying in my older brother's dorm room at Loyola, Baltimore. For what trivia it is worth - After '83 (see below): ...Expand for more
- Conemaugh Township Area High School – I saw several of you before and during my time at Penn State when visiting the old family place in Hollsopple, as well as during one 'memory tour' visit to the Davidsville area. I now realize just how small that school was. I have the most clear and fond memories of fellow students from there. - Homestead High School – Almost everyone I associated with there is dead. It was very small group. Apparently, life on the streets of Pittsburgh/Homestead/Munhall was hard in the early '80s. I know it was friggin sketchy when I would drop in to visit family in '82 and '83. My last visit was in '96 (and if one specific person is reading this.... yes, that was a gray unmarked Crown Vic). - Glen Burnie (Burnout) High School – Have not seen any of you since our Richie Highway parties during the time I attended Old Mill. Old Mill did not hold a candle to Glenn Burnie on quality and frequency of parties. Loved hanging with the crew and the midnight Cherry Hill and weekend bombing runs to Ocean City. Was also fun mixing with both Old Mill/Glen Burnie HS crowds at the Glen Burnie video arcade, having attend both schools. Funny how that last point did lead to the occasional scuffle. God, did we enjoy fighting, or what? - Old Mill High School - I ran into a couple of you during my time at Penn State, briefly dated one of you over the course of some semesters, then had drinks years later with one of you in Paris (chance encounter at Charles De Gaulle Airport), dinner with a different one of you in Rome, as well as had dinner/evening with a "special memory/friend" in Annapolis in 2011. It appears that Old Mill produced the most successful and widest roaming graduates of all the schools I attended. Again, my very best regards to all of you. Currently living large on the San Andreas fault in Silicon Valley and waiting for the Big One! Bring it! It will have great entertainment value, no doubt. Confirm "offset aimpoint selected." "Weapons Free." Bombing coordinates to my office are 37.419799 N 122.204172 W (+/-) 285 ft. That's tight enough for a JDAM if sparkle is on the south face. (Pro Tip): People are the most dangerous animals you face. Happy Hunting!
