Al's Story

Life Born Toronto (TO), Ontario (ON), Canada during WWII. When young, my Dad was a career Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) officer so we lived a number of different places, all in ON - Trenton (Trenton Air Force Base (AFB)), TO (Downsview AFB & Overseas), Arnprior AFB (on base – bused to school in Arnprior), & Ottawa (Rockliffe AFB). I consider myself from Scarborough, ON (TO) however, since I lived there most after the age of eight (after my Dad was killed testing a plane for RCAF). I attended High School there, & the few life-friends I have are either still there/consider being from there. In my early 20s (1960s) I went south & joined the United States Air Force (USAF) during Vietnam. I lived in San Antonio (Lackland AFB, TX), Champagne (Chanute AFB, IL), San Rafael (Hamilton AFB, CA), & Mount Clemens (Selfridge AFB, MI) while serving & never went to the war zone. An interesting thing while I served in the USAF -- I was nicknamed "Doc" by one of the Training Instructors while I was at Lackland AFB, & it stayed with me through my whole Air Force career. The same thing had happened to my Father in the RCAF. Although I met her a number of years earlier through my life-best-friend, my wife-to-be Terry (Theresa) & I started seeing each other and we were married while I was still at Selfridge AFB (Detroit). She was originally from Penetanguishene, ON, but was living with her sister & a girlfriend in TO at that time. Most weekends/leaves were spent on the highways/buses/trains between TO and Detroit/Windsor then to see each other. We married in early 1968 & my son Alex was born in the Selfridge AFB Hospital, Mount Clemens, MI a few months before my release. After discharge, we stayed/lived in Detroit while I finished college. We then moved (at the advice of a Prof) to California (CA) to accept a position. San Jose (SJ) was our home there mostly. I worked mainly at Peterbilt Trucks, & Bennett's Photo. However, we a...Expand for more
lso lived in Fallbrook, San Leandro & Hayward before eventually moving to SJ. My daughter Dawn was born in San Leandro while there. We decided to return to TO in 1974 & we lived in Scarborough for awhile until we finally bought a house & settled in Pickering. The housing markets were priced so differently between CA & TO that we couldn’t just take our equity from SJ & buy here right away -- houses were much more expensive in TO at that time. Our children basically grew up in Pickering. I spent almost forty years in the data processing (computer) field after first being trained into it in the USAF while I was at Selfridge AFB. The last 25 years or so I operated basically as a freelance independent consultant. After 2000 and all the expected Year-2000 computer problems were over, I retired. I don't have too many hobbies. I used to be an ardent model railroader when I was younger, but that ended when all my equipment including many metal cars & engines that I had built myself were stolen & never recovered while I was in the U. S. A. I've developed a love of History -- I guess that would be a hobby for a non-teacher. I'm finally reading the many books I collected over the years. As a History buff, I am also into family genealogy. I've traced my Father's family back two generations in Scotland, and my Mother through Québec and Acadia to France. My wife is a direct descendant of Pierre Boucher, the first Mayor of Trois Rivieres, Quebec. He came to New France with the Jesuits in the 1630s. Writings from his journal were used a lot during the recent CBC TV series "History of Canada", especially around episodes 3-5. My recent personal interest in the Stock Market could be considered a hobby, since I always left most investments to the pros. I am also a member of a monthly Men's Breakfast Club, and a Veterans Group. I enjoy both immensely. I'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM ANYONE I MAY HAVE KNOWN AT SOME TIME IN MY LIFE!!!!!!
