Alan's Story

After graduating from Aiken in 1967, I went on to major in music education at Ohio University (the one in Athens) Before I headed off to college, Dr. Worrel (music supervisor) told me not to look anywhere else for a teaching position when I finsihed until I checked with Cincinnati public schools first. I followed his instructions, and in the fall of 1972, I started my first teaching assignment at Dater Junior High school in Westwood. I taught there for 12 great years, got surplussed and ended up at Woodward for one year. Came back to Dater and stayed for five more years before getting my "dream" job teaching at Western Hills. I had a good run there, until an assault by a student ...Expand for more
fractured my spine and ended my teaching career in 2001. I've been retired since! Never married, I finally bought my own home in 2001. Every now and then I run into one of my classmates from Aiken. I usually go back for the reunions. The class of '67 just had one in November of 2007 (our 40th) and we finally got the one thing that we never had a chance to do, which was to finally graduate! I still remember the words to the fight song and the alma mater. here's a "did you know". The same gentleman (Merrill Van Pelt) who wrote the Aiken alma mater ALSO composed the Woodward Alma Mater. If you closed your eyes and heard them both, you'll hear that they were cut "from the same cloth".
