Alan's Story

Well, I quit school on my senoir year due to a teacher that I did not get along with. He was my related subjects teacher in Marine Mechanics, Bill Westcott. I made a comment and he took me to the office and I never looked back ( that was a mistake). I worked ful time at Sharkey's Firestone in Hyannis, got married had a baby girl and went in to the US Army. Basic training at Ft Dix,NJ and AIT at Ft Knox, Ky as a tank mechanic. I had recieved orders for Vietnam but due to the fact that I had a new baby and alot of paperwork I was assigned permanant duty at Ft Knox, where I stayed for almost 2 years. Got divorced, never went back to the Cape (wish I had), moved to Maine where I stayed and worked for 4 years (Army reserves for 4 years as well at Ft Devens, Mass). Got tired of getting drty as a truck mechanic so I went back to school in Louisvile, Ky. I got a degree in electronics from U.E.I. After I graduated from U.E.I I took a job in Texas working for Petty-Ray Geophysical as a doodlebugger. I looked for oil in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of the Carolinas and in the Atlantic off the coast of New Foundland. That was a trip. Transfering from St. Johns New Foundland to my boat, I was taken to the biggest oil rig in the world. It was in Hybernia, an oil field off the coast of Canada. It was HUGE. It later sank in heavy seas in a hurricane.I got tired of that job traveling around the country, got remarried, had another baby girl. Went back to U.E.I. for job placement, was recruited by Motorola in south Florida. Bought a house, hafd 2 more children, boy and girl. I am now and have...Expand for more
been since 1981, living in South Florida.Update 2-26-05. Sold home, moving back to Maine. Tired of the HOT summers and snow birds in winter in Florida. Have a travel trailer,wife,8 cats,2 ferrets,1 dog.. Should be interesting for sure. Have been here for overe two years now. I forgot why I left the state back in 78. I left because there were no jobs up here that paid over 3.50 per hour. I got back here after 27 years. And guess what? Still no good jobs. Took me 6 months to find a job that paid over 6.50 per hour. But Maine is a pretty state to live in if you have an income. I would not reccomend it to anyone that is still working for a living unless you are wealthy. The state gov. really sucks.Well, after 4 years, I got laid off as lead service writer for a very large John Deere Tractor dealership. No jobs here in Maine. Moved back to south florida and guess what? No jobs here either. None. That was back in Feb of 2009. I still have not found a job. Over the age of 50 is very tough to get a job. My daughter has moved to Boston to be with her older sister ( I found her again after 36 years), other daughter may move to Georgia in the next year, so whats for me here? Update when it happens. I have connected with a couple of classmates from Barnstable HS. Ann Mayne and Dave Barnicoat. Talked once a few years ago to Bill Cash, have corresponded with Walter Springer. Still looking for a few folks that I went to school with. Did not have many friends in school but I did have a few. Great. That's my story as it stands.
