Alan's Story

I'm a journalist/editor living the dream in the Cayman Islands. I'm in my second long stint here, this one starting in 2002, the first one lasting from '82-'91. I left Cleveland in 1980, 1981 and then for good in 1982. I get back to see my two sisters and their families once a year, sometimes twice. I miss the summers there; the Indians and Browns; the Metropark; and the fall. I also miss Mr. Hero, but then I'm not supposed to be eating that kind of stuff anymore anyway. Other than Cleveland and Grand Cayman, I've lived in Albany, NY (where I got my college degree), Homestead, Florida and a place just south of Knoxville, Tennessee. I also had short stints in Durham, NC (got smacked by Hurricane Fran nine days after I moved there - a very bad omen) and St. Maarten in the eastern Caribbean. I love living in Grand Cayman. Besides the obvious weather advantages, it's a fascinating place. There are people from 120 different countries in the world living among the 55,000 residents. Just about every office is a United Nations of people. In just my 12-person department at the office, we have people from the US, Canada, Germany, Ireland, England, Scotland, South Africa, Barbados and the Cayman Islands. As for my interests, traveling is a big passion; so many places to see, so little time. I'm still active in another big passion, softball, which can be played year round here. I'm a player-coach of a co-ed...Expand for more
team and organize the whole 25-team league. Yeah... I stay busy. I lost just about every material possession I owned in the terrifying Category 5 Hurricane Ivan in 2004, but came to look at is as liberating experience. I've learned you really don't own your possessions; they own you. I do miss all the old photos... and some of the books. I'm a foodie - into cooking and fine wines - and I'm the head of the local Slow Food chapter here in Cayman. I also do quite a bit of food/wine/travel writing for various publications here. True to my Cleveland roots, I'm still a rocker, but have also learned to like many other forms of music - except country. Best Cleveland concert I ever saw? Pink Floyd at the Stadium in the summer of 1977. I do miss the Cleveland music scene. We don't get many big-name artists here, but I did get to see Sheryl Crow open The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman in 2006. I've only stayed in touch with two people from high school, but then I was pretty reserved back in those days and didn't get to know many people. I lost my yearbook in Ivan, but was able to buy a 1977 yearbook available from the alumni association a few years ago. It's funny how I can still remember a lot of the names and faces from back then, even though I really wasn't a big fan of high school. I wouldn't expect many people to remember me - I was pretty shy back then - but if you do, feel free to say hello!
