Alane's Story

Life Okay, here's the boring stuff.... Born in Nuernberg, Germany, in an Army family, moved to El Paso, Texas, when I was a year old. Then moved to Hawaii when I was 4 (the priviledges of living in a military family), then to Frankfurt, Germany, when I was 7. I lived in Wisconsin for 8 months when I was 13 when my dad was in the process of retiring and we had no clue where to go. Then moved to Floresville, Texas, where I stayed until I was 18. Then I left for college in Austin for 4 years. After that, I moved to Madison, Wisconsin, for my graduate work which I am still working on. Moving around has played a major role on most of my life. I get restless staying in one place too long, but I eventually would like to settle down somewhere, I just have no idea where yet. I have friends and family all over the country, and in parts of Europe, so I could be happy just about anywhere. Maybe I'll try the East Coast next... What's new with me? Not much, I'm not married, and nowhere near it. I do not have a boyfriend, nor do I need one to be happy. I date guys now and then, but I don't waste my time with a guy I have no future with, and I don't get into relationships just to have a boyfriend. Plus, I have amazing friends, we go out a lot and have so much fun. Some may say I don't act my age, I act like I'm 21, but I also don't look my age, so screw it. Anyone who knows me knows that I do whatever the heck I want. We only have one life to live, and it's ours, so we might as well do whatever makes us happy while we can. I hate stereotypes and I tend to surprise people since I don't fall into the stereotypical categories that people think I should fall into. For example, I'm an engineering student, yet I'm not completely unattractive, I actually have social skills, and I'm not a...Expand for more
recluse. My weakness? I'm addicted to coffee. I've tried giving it up countless times this year...I once made it 3 days without coffee, but no one wanted to be around me for some reason. I guess I get crabby without the caffiene in my system. School Growing up, I moved around a bit since Dad was Army. My education began in Hawaii, at Kipapa Elementary. Then we moved to Frankfurt where I was in Frankfurt Elementary. Then to Frankfurt Middle School. Then I lived in Wisconsin for a bit where I went to MHLT. Then I moved to Texas where I went to Floresville Middle and High Schools. I was pretty dorky as a kid, but then I did grow up to (eventually) get my PhD in chemical engineering. I fall in that group of people who would rather forget most of their childhood because life after all the stupidity of being a kid has vastly improved. I guess I always had trouble fitting in, and I was ridiculously shy, so that never helped. I grew out of that in college. College College...definitely better than high school. I went to UT Austin for undergrad for 4 years. I majored in chemical engineering, and was highly involved in Omega Chi Epsilon. I also participated in the Society of Women Engineers and Texas Rugby Little Sisters. I worked part time in the Koros and Schmidt research labs as well as an office job for the Women in Engineering Program. I loved undergrad, Austin was an amazing city to live in, but I had to move on. I am now working on my PhD at the University of Wisconsin Madison. I can honestly say, I have never been happier in my life than I am here and now. I love my friends, I love my "job" as I like to refer to grad school since they actually pay me (decently) to be here. Yeah, the weather has its ups and downs, but it's kinda nice to see snow now and then.
