Albert's Story

I was born on February 4, 1952. When I attended Austin High, I lived at 4429 W. Adams. I graduated from Austin in June 1969. Life since school has been really good I attended the University of Illinois for one (1) year and entered the United States Army. Upon completion of my initial and specialty training I was sent to the Republic of Vietnam. I served in three different units during my time there. First, I served with Company H, 75th Infantry (Airborne Rangers) Regiment. This tour was followed by a short tour with Company C, 5th Battalion, 7th Calvary. And finally, I served with Company P, 75th Infantry (Airborne Rangers) Regiment. On March 28, 1971, I was wounded in combat, while serving as a Ranger assigned to Company P, 75th Infantry (Airborne Rangers). During that firefight, I almost lost my left arm. Once I returned to the states, I began what turned out to be a great career. I achieved the rank of First Sergeant and had graduated the United States Army's Sergeants' Majors Course (the highest school one can attend as an enlisted soldier). After completing 24 years in the U.S. Army, I went back to school, completed college and became a middle school Mathematics and science teacher, teaching 8th grade science. I got married on July 27, 1985, to Marquetta Ann Elder, and now I have two adult children Winston 34, (a financial analysis for a Fortune 500 Company) and Whitney 26, (a software developer for a company that handles credit card accounts). My wife retired from the Army in February 2007. I have coached High School Football, Middle School Football, Middle School Boys Basketball, and Middle School Girls Track & Field aside from my teaching assignments. until August 2006, I changed to a different school. The school is almost 100% black This school was especially challenging for me to reach the students. However, I prevailed. When the students finally started behaving correctly in class, the school turned itself around because of positive leadership. In high school many considered me nerdy, quiet, and reserved, as it turns out, they were right. I now blow off steam by walking or running. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Ray Turner, because we were the best of friends. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel by adding on another 3000 square feet to the 4000+ I already own. I really need more closet space (laugh!). In 2008, Vietnam's Agent Orange caught up with me. I had Prostate Cancer, a blood clot, a near total renal failure, and a major infection. Luckily, I survived. I am currently moving forward in life and no longer taking things casually. I am doing find while waiting on the VA. (Laugh) These are not the most competent people on the planet. They are slow, often inefficient,...Expand for more
and sometimes very nasty when you question them. It is amazing that people need jobs and the VA behaves the way they do. They are blessed I'm not in charge. I would fire the lazy and hire people willing to learn and work. As one might deduce, I am not a happy camper when it come to the VA. In September 2009, I attended a 40th Class Reunion at the Marriott Hotel in Chicago. I must say we had a marvelous time exchanging our pasts. A highlight was the shocking news that everyone including Randle Banks thought I had gotten killed in action in the Republic of Vietnam. Apparently the message had been sent to all my friends of my demise. However, I am glad that I was able to clear up that myth. I am no longer so shy. My wildest moment in school was playing the Scare Crow in the high school play The Wizard of OZ. It is so sad that I admired three girls in school but was too shy to approach any of them. I hope everyone remembers me as a good person. The biggest surprise in my life was the military career that spanned 24 years. If I could turn back the hands of time, I would have kept in touch with my classmates more and been more outgoing in school. This would enable me to be closer with most of my classmates today. The weirdest job I ever had was selling vacuum cleaners for about 3 months. I always wondered what life would have been like as a civil engineer. . Guys check your PSA level every year. This is to detect Prostrate Cancer and catch it early ensuring a longer life. It's never too late to teach school; Try it. My home is 4400 square feet. My dream home would be 7400 square feet. From the children I teach, I have learned patience. My current age is 61. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be gray and wrinkled. I was so completely wrong. I have two heroes. First, there is Thurgood Marshall and secondly, General Roscoe Robinson Jr. Justice Marshall's legacy speaks for itself. On the other hand, Roscoe Robinson Jr., is another story. Does anyone realize he was the first Black Four-Star General in the United States Army? He was one who inspired me to achieve excellence in everything I undertake. He is a true Hero. Update! They are closing my school because of budget restraints. I am uncertain about where or what I will teach this fall. However, what and where ever I teach, I have my Goal of being the best the students see and hear. Keep your fingers crossed and prayers rolling for me getting a new position teaching 8th Grade Mathematics 8th Grade Physical Science, or 9th Grade Coordinate Algebra? I really like teaching those subjects. It is my intention to teach for as long as it is still fun. As of 10 October 2016, I have a new grandson. On the 10th of November I am remarried. I now live in Maryland.
