Albert's Story

My story, I enlisted inn the Air Force upon graduation from hi school. Following basic training and basic medical school at Lackland Air Force base in San Antonio Texas, I was assigned to Gunter AFB in Montgomery Alabama for 20 weeks of Medical Equipment Repair School. Upon completion I was assigned to the 7520th USAF Hospital at South Ruislip AFB which is just outside London. We serviced the medical equipment at all our military installations throughout the UK and Scotland. This was great duty and it is hard to beat London as a duty station especially back then when you could live very well on enlisted mans pay in London. It was a real eye opener and I saw first hand how well we had it in USA. I played softball on both the squadron and base teams. The last year our squadron won the base championship and our base team the London Rockets came in 2nd in the UK tournament. I built my career on the training I received in the USAF. I am very proud and thankful for the experience of serving in the USAF. My long term goal was to be a professional race driver. Ideally in Formula 1 Grand Prix cars. I had the opportunity to go through Jim Russell Racing Drivers School while stationed with the USAF in England. I believe I went through in the 4th year since Jim Russell founded the school. So Jim was my primary instructor. The school now has branches' internationally and many of the current auto racing stars of today are alumni. I was able to obtain my FIA International Racing license prior to my discharge from the Air Force. I moved to Los Angeles California after a few months back in Reading in hopes of being able to continue pursing a career in motor racing. I worked as a Field Service Engineer in Dental Equipment then X-Ray Equipment during this time. I also went to a school, for Movie Stunt people which was located just outside LA at Corriganville Movie Ranch. I was hoping to break into this field to earn enough money to continue my pursuit of a career in motor racing. I worked 5 days a week as a Field service engineer and weekends at the ranch where we put on shows based on old west events. It was a hoot and since everything was live there were no retakes. Funny things would happen such as the blanks in our guns misfiring so instead of a loud gun shot you would get a small ping from the primer going off failing to ignite the main charge. You can imagine the scenne with Billy the Kid who had just broke out of jail and was up on the roof with a shot gun when the Marshal returned after hearing shots from the jail. In this scene Billy would shoot the Marshall who was pleading to him not to fire. As the tension mounted Billy pulled the double barrel shot gun triggers and instead of loud blasts, only the primers went off with two small pings. We had to follow though as if all went according to plan. The crowd would crack up but it was still embarrassing for us doing the scene. During this period I felt God's hand in my life and started attending Church on a regular basis. Jim Russell had opened a school at Willow Springs which is about 80 miles from LA and I finally had a chance to reactivate my auto racing career. Well by that time I was very active in the Church and a moment of decision arrived. I felt I was being called to the ministry. As much as I loved and still to this day love auto racing, I felt I had to choose one or the other and I chose staying active in the church. I met my wife in Church and we were married in 1969. In 1971 I was ordained a Deacon and served in that capacity until I was ordained an Elder in 1979. We moved to Seattle in 1971 to accept a promotion...Expand for more
to Service Manager. We went to Spokane in 1974 when I transitioned into sales. In 1976 we moved to Yakima where I was the Area Manager for both Sales and Service activities. In 1980 we moved to Oklahoma City where I was the Branch Manager responsible for all of Oklahoma. We remained in Oklahoma till 1985 when my position was eliminated following our company being acquired . We moved to the Portland Oregon area where my wife was from and remained there 19 years until me moved to Texas. During this time I remained very active in the church. I served in various capacities from a Board Member to Associate Pastor and Senior Pastor. I continued to work full time outside the church to support my ministry. My oldest daughter who was a Coast Guard veteran with a medical disability gave birth to twins in 20001. She did not wish to marry their father but chose to raise them as a single mom. We had plenty of room in the house so they all moved in with us. Around 2004 my daughter said she was hoping to move to a warmer less damp climate with lower housing costs then Portland Oregon. She did some research and the Texas Hill Country caught her eye. My wife and I were not looking forward to the twins being being 2000 miles away. Fortunately my job allowed me to live anywhere as long as I was near a major airport. So we began getting our home ready for sale and researching property in the Texas Hill Country. In spring of 2005 I sent my daughter down to Texas to check out the area. She wasn't impressed with the area near Austin which I liked based on internet research. So she headed west towards the Fredericksburg area. We got an excited call from her. She said the country got more and more beautiful as she approached Fredericksburg. So we got her linked up with a realtor to check out properties. My goal was to find a home on an acre or two. I wanted something we could move into as soon as we were able to sell our home in Oregon. She also looked at some land which was for sale. She came across 20 acres for sale and based on her description we made an offer on the property. We purchased the property in June 2005. In June of 2006 our home finally sold and we headed down to Fredericksburg in July. I had sent my wife down to find a rental home for ourselves and one for our daughter and twins as soon as we had a contract on our existing home. It took a year before we settled on a home plan and a builder. We began. construction in June of 2007. I was the contractor and hired a project manager to assist in getting the house built. In July I lost my job due to a restructuring that eliminated my position. This enabled me to focus full time on getting the house completed. We had to tap into most of our IRA to complete the house and own it outright. I hated to do this, but it turned out to be a blessing since much of my IRA would have been lost due to the current economic downturn. I am currently semi-retired and working full time as a Collections Assistant in Curatorial Department at the National Museum of the Pacific War here in Fredericksburg. It is an outstanding museum and a must see if you are in Texas. We have had around 130,000 visitors in the first 11 months of 2110. I am in pretty good health and feel I can work another 3-5 years which would help rebuild our reserves. It was really nice to be able to attend our 50th class reunion in 2008. That was only the 3rd one I was able to attend. I was able to link up with classmates I had not seen or heard from in 50 years. Time sure has flown by.
