Alex's Story

Life Alex Fekete was born in 1946 in Kishunhalash, Hungary; which is a small town Southwest of Budapest. In 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, he and his family escaped Communism in pursuit of freedom and Democracy. They settled in Toronto Canada where he attended Alderwood Collegiate, which he left for an apprenticeship in the Motion Picture film industry with Pathe Deluxe Film Company. In the mid 70's he immigrated to the United States. He married his wife Joyce and her two sons in 1979, at which time he moved to Pembroke Pines. Aside from his active political life, he is owner of Cinema Productions wherein his duties included; cinematographer, scriptwriter, and a film producer. His main focus now is consulting work through his affiliate company known as Advertising Marketing and Consulting. Alex Fekete served as a Pembroke Pines City Commissioner from August 1990 to March 1995. He served as Vice Mayor in 1992/1993 and was elected Mayor in March of 1995 and served as Mayor from 1995 to 2004 In his years leading to elected office he served on the Planning and Zoning Board and is past President of the Miramar/Pembroke Chamber of Commerce and the Pembroke Pines Rotary Club. He has also served on the Flamingo Bank Board of Directors and the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners. He is the Founding Chairman of Leadership Miramar/Pembroke Chamber of Commerce and served as Scouting Coordinator of Pasadena Lakes Optimists and the South Florida Boy Scout's Executive Board as well as three years as District Chairman. He is the recipient of the 1998 Broward County Distinguished Citizen Award from the South Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He has served as a member of the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization, the South Florida Regional Planning Council, and past member of the Water Advisory Board for Broward County. ts, Culture and Recreation Committee and the Jobs, Education and the Workforce Committee. He is the former Chair of the National League of Cities’ Finance, Administration, and Intergovernmental Relations Committee (F.A.I.R.) and has served on the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities. In 1999 while serving as Vice Chair of the F.A.I.R. Committee, he provided written and live testimony to both Senate and Congressional Committees. He served on U.S. Senator Bob Graham's Military Academy Appointment Committee and has participated on the Broward County School Board Facilities Task Force and the Broward County School Blue Ribbon Committee. He is also a past member of the Florida League of Cities Board of Directors, served as Chair of their International Relations Committee, sat on the Federal Action Strike Team (FAST) where he was Vice Chair, and also served on the City of Wonders Technical Advisory Committee. He is past President of the Broward County League of Cities and previously served many years on their Board of Directors. Honorary positions include the Knights of Pythias Pembroke Pines Diamond Lodge # 220, Young Israel of Pembroke Pines, Pembroke Pines Optimist and Pembroke Pines Rotary. He is the recipient of the Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce individual of the year award, 1998; the Boy Scouts of America Citizen of the Year Award as well as the City of Hope’s Spirit of Life Humanitarian Award for the Year 2000 and the American Jewish Congress SE Region Distinguished Civic Achievement Award. He has worked with U.N.E.S.C.O. (United Nations Education, Science and Cultural Organization) and established Friendly Relations with Astrakhan, Russia, Boucan-Carre, Haiti and a City in Argentina. He actively supports Sister Cities as well as other National and International Organizations for the enhancement and improvement of International Relations and Understanding. Finally, he is a very proud Grandfather.
