Alicia's Story

Life Howdy... I'm Alicia Law. I went to Sealth for four years and graduated in '04. High school? Some good things, some bad, but it was an overall unforgettable experience. I miss playing fastpitch softball (and baseball!), football, playing stickball with my friends, going to practices, and just having fun. Right now, I still live in Seattle. I'm a member of an Army Reserve unit as an 89 B. Going to ALC (for higher rank) sometime this year. I also attended Highline CC for a little over a year. I love sports, running, weightlifting, and practicing Butokukan karate. I'm getting ready to test for shodan. Family is the most important thing in my life. My mom is my best friend. We enjoy eating out and just having a good time. College College... well, I went to Highline CC to earn my AAS in Exercise Science. Now I'd like to go back to school to pursue my 4 year degree. Military "I say hooah..." That's become my most overused phrase. In the Army, "hooah" means a lot of things: I feel you, hell yes, and basically everything except no. I joined the Army in '05. I joined because I love my country, but also because I wanted to prove that I could do it. I wanted to be less quiet and more proactive, both for me and for my family and friends. Boot camp... sucked. I had it at Ft Jackson SC. Hot and humid, and buggy. A lot of yelling. I also never want to see sand again. When our platoon got in trouble, which happened a lot, the DS's would take us "out ...Expand for more
to the beach" (really a big sand pit, to be "smoked." Push ups, flutterkicks, front back gos, mountain climbers; you'd be very tired after a smoking.) Plus we had all our gear on, and it was usually at least 95 or 100 degrees outside. There were some good things, though. Doing PT in the morning with my platoonmates was the best feeling in the world. It was early, so it was pretty cool, and you could see the dew on the grass and the plants. Actually seeing geese flying in a V was cool, too. Can't see that in the city. Learning to work as a team was another good thing about boot camp. Normally, everyone in your platoon is your buddy, but you're paired with one special person who you can lean on and who you're responsible for. My battle buddy was great. Pvt Larsen from Wisconsin. We'd keep each other sane during fireguard, and help each other with Drill and Ceremony. Qualifying on the M16's was surprisingly easy. We practiced zeroing and rifle marksmanship fundamentals in line. When you get on the range, you have to hit pop up targets of varying distances, some up to 300 yards. We stayed out all night until everyone qualified; I got sharpshooter (33 of 40.) We also had long marches, classes on GC, LOAC, and the Code of Conduct, Army Values, and lots more weapons trng. Also survival skills, and hand to hand combat. I was assigned to Ft. Lawton, near Magnolia. Anyway, (I know I got carried away) I'm going to apply for Warrant Officer Candidate School later this year.
