Alvin's Story
For thoose of you who may be interested in what happenen to this member of the Class of 1953, here are a few of the highlights.
After SHS I headed to Amherst College where I earned my BA. Next stop was the University of Kansas. In 1961 I moved on, with a Ph.D in Anatomy and Biochemistry, to accept an Assistant Professorship at the Medical College of Virginia..I later joined the faculty at the Yale School of Medicine before joining the faculty at Vanderbilt School of Medicine where I spent the rest of my academic career. In '92 I was given a secondary appointment as Professor of Cell Biology in Nursing (nursing students were more fun than med students). In 2000 I was appointed Emeritus Professor in both Schools of Medicine and Nursing.. During my now 21 years of "retirement" I have been anything but idle. For 14 yrs I worked with the Long-Term Ombudsman program, where we are essentially advocates for the residents of long term care facilities...Expand for more
..My wife of 32 yrs is now doing the same thing. After that, I started tutoring math in an afterschool program for disadvantaged kids (most of the kids I work with are 3rd through 12th grade). Still find time for hunting and fishing as well as our farm in Bethpage. I've recently taken up art (mostly pencil. water color and gouache - an opaque form of water color.). Never had any formal training in art until recently, although I did illustrate my "Textbook of Neuroanatomy" (pub. 1993), but that was more of technical ink illustrations -today that's all computer illustrations). Moved on from the tutoring to working a fairly new "Veterans Healing Arts Program", a program we'll be expanding in the near future when our new building a the Monthaven Arts and Cultural Center here in Hendersonville is completed.. Have also agreed to a position on the Veterans Advisory Board at Monthaven. Still have time for my other, extra-curricular activities. Alvin
