Amanda 's Story
Life after High School:
I graduated from Grand Valley State University with a B.A. in International Relations and Business. As undergrad, I studied in Poland and Germany. I worked for the Study Abroad office at Grand Valley throughout undergrad.
Life after College:
My first job out was in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher through the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme. Afterward, I moved to New York City where I worked in study abroad administration. I really loved the work but wanted to get a Master's degree. I spent a semester in a Masters program at Michigan State University, studying Student Affairs Administration. After working for Michigan State, I defected to the University of Michigan. Then I moved with my fiance to Georgia in 2003. There I was an Admissions and Testing Advisor for Chattahoochee Technical College before becoming a Human Resources Generalist. 2006 was a rough year as both me and my husband were laid off. We made our way back to Michigan where I finished my Master's at Michigan State. Now we are both looking forward to returning south and are actively looking to relocate!
Joys outside of work/school:
I am still connected with great friends from Napoleon, from college and from my travels around the world. I am married to a great guy who loves to travel as much as I do. We are always planning our next trip. I have no children, and I am too busy with neices and nephews to ever want one of my own. We are looking ahead to a BEAUTIFUL new house and we enjoying the Southern hospitality and weather.
High School
In high school, I was always somewhere in the middle. Had great friendships that I thought would last forever...sadly, only a couple have. I enjoyed Spanish with Mrs. Nugent, English with Mrs. Alden and History with Mr. Boer. And always I yearned to travel and see far away lands.
I loved ...Expand for more
being a "flag girl" in the band and spending my Sundays in springtime with Forensics.
High school was good enough to leave fond and lovely memories...and exactly what I needed to grow and learn from.
College
In college I was finally able to travel the world. Poland will always be where my heart is, though the Lorenz's in Tuebingen are still part of my global family. I relaxed on my drive for the best grades in exchange for taking interesting classes and meeting really fabulous professors. Shakespeare with Ivo Soljan and Astronomy with Xavier Estrada were the best night classes ever taught at GVSU. Being able to call my adivsor by her first name is still a gem I treasure.
Graduate School
I took my first gruduate class in teaching English as a Second Language at Grand Valley. It was exciting and prepared me for great job teaching English in Japan.
After a small stop out I returned to Michigan State to finish my Master's in Student Affairs Administration. With husband right beside me we met the challenge of a live-in Residence Life graduate assistantship and all the adventures graduate school brings.
Through it all - I still love education, learning and intellectual exchange (especially across cultures).
Workplace
I have never been without a job since I was sixteen years old. Whether it was fast food, babysitting, housekeeping or office work...I am sure that I have done just about everything I had any kind of skill at doing.
Two favorite jobs were as a clown for children's birthday parties and my work as an Enrollment Coordinator for Council on International Education, International Study Programs (CIEE-ISP).
I looking for a full-time, long-term position in international education administration. With a newly minted Master's degree and years of experience I am confident that I will land safely somewhere I can call home.
