Amber's Story

Amber entered the Delayed Enlistment Program (DEP) for the United States Air Force in May 1994 and graduated from Lemoore High School in June 1994. In August that same year she officially enlisted into the Air Force at the Military Entrance Processing Center (MEPS) in Fresno, California. Amber was sent to Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas to attend basic military training and graduated in October 1994. She then graduated Supply Management technical school at the same base in December of the same year. Her first duty assignment was the 366th Supply Squadron in Mountain Home AFB, Idaho where she supported F-15 C and E, F-16 fighters; KC-135 re-fueler/cargo planes; and B-1B bombers. While there she aided the Search and Rescue Team in the recovery and data collection of a C-130 crash and an F-15 crash, also participated in deployments to Cold Lake, Canada and Saudi Arabia. While in Saudi Arabia in 1997 she met her now husband who was stationed at Hill AFB, Utah. In late 1997 they both accepted an assignment to Kunsan AB, Republic of South Korea. By February 1998 they were both in Korea and in April that year they were married in Seoul. Amber worked with War Reserve Materiel and operated a 10K forklift and 40-foot tractor-trailer to transport items for inspection and/or repair. Senior Airman Perkins was awarded the 1998 Airman Professional Provider of the Year award for the 8th Supply Squadron, Kunsan Air Base, and out of all of the Pacific Air Force (PACAF) bases. In February 1999 she was assigned as Stock Clerk in Storage an Issue at the 99th Supply Squadron, supplying parts to visiting fighter units, base assigned fighters and helicopters, and various other organizations. Within the first year there she earned a line number for Staff Sergeant and attended Airman Leadership School. Before transferring to the 57th Rescue Squadron in May 2000 as Support and Operations Supervisor she was promoted to Staff Sergeant/E5. deployments, she was transferred to a new duty section back to 99th Supply Squadron as a Aircraft Stockroom Supervisor. There she oversaw the build-up of items to deploy in support of the Rescue Squadron that she reluctantly had to leave. Amber¿s youngest Stepson moved into their Las Vegas home on a permanent basis Easter 2000 at the age of nine. Staff Sergeant Perkins¿ enlistment was to be complete in December 2001 and she decided to re-enlist after that dreadful day on September 11th. In October Amber attended Supply Craftsman School at Lackland AFB, Texas and returned to Las Vegas with an office job as Assistant Unit Training Manager in November. In May 2002 Amber became a mother to a baby girl. Over the next few years Amber had two spinal surgeries and was medically discharged from the Air Force in May 2005. This did not hinder her from receiving a nomination as 2002 non- commissioned officer Professional Provider of the Year for 99th Logistics Readiness Squadron and an Excellent rating during an Air Force Logistics Standardization and Evaluation Team (LSET) inspection in summer of 2004. The training program and staff received an honorable mention and coin due to their outstanding program. The Program was used as a model for all Logistic Readiness Squadrons (LRS) in Air Combat Command (ACC). In November 2004 Staff Sergeant Perkins¿ husband retired from the Air Force after 20 years of faithful serve. He and their son moved to Alpena, Michigan in August 2004, so upon her separation in May 2005 she and her daughter moved to there as well. While there she was a homemaker and an active member in the education and well being of her teenage step-son and daughter. Amber was also an active member at the Alpena Civic Theater working as an actress, usher, stage hand, and office staff; she applied these skills at her local church as actress and director of short skits; and accepted a position as weekend producer. Just recently the entire family moved outside of Chattanooga, TN.
