Amelia's Story
Life
After graduation from IHS in 1975, I attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville for two years. In 1977 I transfered to Virginia Tech in Blacksburg in order to marry our classmate, M. David Halsey. David and I were married for 8 years, during which time we had one son, Benjamin Bland Halsey (in 1980) and I completed law school at UVa in 1985. David remarried in 1991 and is an engineer with General Dynamics in Marion.
Ben received his D.V.M. from Virginia Tech in May 2006 and owns Smyth County Animal Hospital in Marion. He is married Autumn Stark (now Halsey) at the end of May 2006 on the beach at sunset in Key West, Florida. Their first child, Mason David, was born in May 2007. They are expecting a daughter in April 2010.

m for 5 years. In 1989 our son, Joseph William Bland Beaty, was born. We moved to Marion in 1991. Will graduated from Marion Senior High School in 2008 and is a student at Emory & Henry College, double-majoring in pharmacy and theater.
My Dad, who was a private pilot, died in 1997. Following his death I decided to get my own pilot's license (Mom & Dad named me for Amelia Earhart). I soloed on December 15, 1998 and got my license from the FAA in March of 2002.
From 1993 to 2004 I had my own law firm in Marion, Bland & Associates, P.C. In October 2004 I sold that practice to my associate, Melissa Carrico, and went to work for the Virginia Attorney General's Office. My office is in Abingdon -- I cover courts from Smyth County, west(about 8 counties in all).
In October 2005 Joe and I separated after 18 years of marriage.
In October 2007, I married our class-mate, Jimmy Waller. We live in Elk Creek on weekends and have a pied-a-terre in Marion where we stay during the week.
