Amelia's Story

I am Arthur and Mildred Boyken's fifth daughter. My sisters are: Sherry Denise Sullivan Hannover Kelly and she passed away February 21st of 1990 at 42 years of age from complications of multiple myeloma and annorexia; Martha Ann Rurup; Janine Beth Brandt; and Melinda Sue Bilyeu Cook. After graduating from high school I worked for three years at the Titonka Care Center as a nurse aid. Finding this to my liking, I went on to get an Associate Nursing Degree from Iowa Methodist School of Nursing in Des Moines and worked in Des Moines for approximately 8 years as an RN. I left Des Moines in 1993 to move back to Titonka and be around to help my sister with my parents who were doing great but becoming a little fragile physically. I met my husband, Robert Dale Coates by absent-mindedly placing a Personal Ad in the Globe Gazette, which, thankfully!?!, Rob answered! My dad passed away rather unexpectedly December 11, 1995, as he was going to have a follow-up angiogram, but he never made it past getting dressed in the hospital gown. He did get to meet Rob, and gave me his whole-hearted approval which I am so grateful for. Mom had diabetes, an enlarged heart, congestive heart failure and multiple sclerosis. She lived to see me married and then passed away at the Titonka Care Center with almost all of us around her bedside when she took her last long look, smiled at everyone of us and then quietly went to God and Dad. That was December 7, 1999. My husband had 3 children from his first marriage and when we married on June 27,...Expand for more
1997, and I became step-mom to three and a grandmother of, then, three. We are now awaiting the arrival of the 7th grandchild due in January 2011. Our children are: Justin Avery Coates married to Lauren Rhame-Coates, parents of Tyler Alexa-15, and Alacia Grace- 9; Lenore Helena Coates, divorced, parent to Taybri Marie-14, Alexander-13, and Noah-9; and Nikolay Alexis Coates married to Jillian Kuehn-Coates, parents to Jackson Robert-2 and another on the way! My sisters and I all have multiple sclerosis and all of us are doing very well with minimal complications-- more like minor irritations right now, and we're thankful for that! My husband just retired from his job as School Psychologist for AEA 267 in St. Ansgar and Francis Lauer Youth Services here in Mason City. I am teaching severely behavior-disordered children, grades 3 to 6, at Four Oaks School (used to be known as Gerard of Mason City). My husband, his friend Dennis Root, and I have been playing (guitar and mandolin) and singing at local/area coffee houses, eating establishments and nursing homes. We are happy and excited to be the opening act for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on July 2, 2010, at the legendary Surf Ballroom from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. I'm not exactly sure but I do believe that I might possibly be the first Titonka graduate to sing at the Surf. Correct me if I'm wrong! We are going to be at the Surf once again as the sole performers for a Democratic fundraiser on August 12th!
