Amy's Story
LIFE
Jeff, a fellow Western Michigan University alum, and I have been married for 20 years. We have two beautiful blondies, ages 12 and 8. I taught high school math for ten years, but have stayed home since having children. That's been a blessing as it's allowed me to tutor, decorate our home, get involved at church, and take part in all aspects of our daughters' lives.
We moved from Lake Orion, Michigan to Kingwood, Texas, north of Houston, in July of 2001. Despite being so far from family, we enjoyed the area, the weather, and the people very much! In August 2007, although still in Texas, we moved near Dallas due to a job transfer. It's also a beautiful area, and although moving was hard, we ended up loving Dallas too (took me 15 months to admit it though). Now Jeff's job has taken us even farther from Michigan. On September 5, 2009, we were relocated to Budapest, Hungary! Never thought a small town girl like me would live in Europe - go figure! Summer of 2010 brought us back to the U.S. and back to Kingwood, TX. We are ready to stay put for awhile now!
SCHOOL
Moving in tenth grade from one school to another (and from my mom's to my dad's) was not easy. I had attended Grandville since kindergarten and did NOT want to move! Fortunately, God knew what was best for me and I can't thank all the teachers and students at Hudsonville High enough. I absolutely loved my two-and-a-half years as an Eagle, and now, because of attending ...Expand for more
two high schools, I have twice as many "old" friends and classmates to remember!
Since I really enjoyed school, I had a lot of special teachers. Mr. Luttikhuizen probably was the creme de la creme of the bunch! I respected the faculty as a whole so much that I ended up teaching back at HHS for a couple years! (Grandville also had great teachers and I'd say Mrs. Magennis and Ms. Brown top that list.)
As far as friends are concerned, I had a great group at both schools. Supposedly peer pressure is tough during the teen years, but I only had the positive kind! I pray the same will be true for my daughters.
I have reconnected with a few childhood friends from Grandville through classmates, and have never lost touch with the Rebel Sisters (inside joke) from HHS - Anne Hoezee, Lori Suskey, Sharon VanDerKolk and Lynne Vandebunte. In fact, we all met at Sharon's in Chicago in 2006. A neat thing about our class was that you could have your best friends, but also get along with and do things with lots of others too. I'm amazed at how many fond memories flood back when looking through the yearbook, and they include lots of my classmates and friends from the Classes of 1985 -1989.
I cherish the entire group we hung out with and senior year was the best! Rebel Sisters, Homeboys, Plant Life, Powder Puff, Hayride, Homecoming, and the list goes on.
I enjoyed our 20th Reunion and look forward to seeing you again at the 25th, if not before!
