Amy's Story

Life Life has taken some interesting turns since graduating high school and college. I have developed an itch to travel since being in my girlfriends ocean-side wedding in Mexico a while back, but I can never find time to scratch my itch. (I am a bit of a workaholic but not too bad). I do find myself taking the occasional roadtrip to DC or New York to visit college friends. But most of my time is spent puttering around the house, starting home improvement projects but not really finishing them. We have found we're better at the demolish than the reconstruct! Otherwise we have been finding ways to keep life interesting, like new cooking styles. We have fun in the kitchen, but I wouldn't recommend the seaweed soup. That was a big mistake from the beginning and I can't believe he talked me into it. Still a softie for cute boys, I guess. **6/9/07** Scott and I tied the knot in Ann Arbor, MI!! We had lovely weather and were surrounded by family and friends to make our weekend such a joy to celebrate. :) Our Alaskan honeymoon cruise was awesome beyond words and anyone who has the chance to head north needs to see that beautiful state!! We're looking forward to creating a home together and filling it full of loving memories. Finally I have the one who makes my heart go flippity-flop. **07/30/12** Our lovely daughter Cecelia was born! She has been such a blessing in our lives, and people marvel at how calm, social, and happy she is. She has been sleeping through the night since she was 2months, and now sleeps 10hours a night - we are well rested!! I came back to work in October and the transition to working-Mom went very smoothly. CC loves daycare and watches the big kids closely, she has already learned so much! We're looking forward to watching her grow into a beautiful young lady! School High school was such a fun time for me! Sports were great, friends were hilarious, and toilet-papering Coach Core's house was always the highlight of the season. (Poor guy, sorry!) I'll always remember how much fun it was getting to play softball and volleyball with my older sister Laura! It was always fun being called the "Gerdes girls" and I missed her athletic skill when she graduated in 93. Senior year was a little different for me, I withdrew a little bit socially and even in athletics when I opted out of basketball my Senior year. llenging. Not many people knew at the time but the divorce had a big impact, it even effected my schoolwork and college planning. There were times when I didn't want to go to school, sometimes a rough practice made me want to quit the team. I obviously survived but everything always seems so dramatic and emotional when you're a teenager! I'm so thankful for my friends who stuck by me and reached out to me during Senior year, but feel bad about loosening ties with other people during that time. I hope our 10+1 year reunion will give me a chance to say hello and chat with everyone I've been missing during the past decade! College As fun as high school was for me, I think it was simply a warm-up for college. I was blessed enough to be part of the rowing team, and later the fencing team (hello, me with a weapon?!? yeah baby!), and met some amazing people through those sports. My girls from the crew team are now some of my closest friends and we travel across the country for reunions and gatherings. Their individual and collective strength is such a source of inspiration, I have never known such brilliant, focused, and successful women. Being such a tomboy I am relieved to have a group of closely-knit women cheering me on through life. I still keep in touch with some people from high school, but it is amazing how much the combination of time and distance can remove you from your Spring Lake roots. Workplace Work continues to make me want to go back to school...! I am thinking more and more of a Masters but can't committ myself to one concentration. I have been delaying the inevitable by taking the occassional self-interest class at the local college, or going to seminars but I'm also thinking of getting out of the healthcare field. A lot of change is coming down the pipe with insurances and reimbursement and healthcare systems tend to be slow to adapt, and flexibility in a large institution being a rumor at best. Something more fast-paced and creative coupled with organizational and protocol adjustment would be my forte, again I just need to committ to two more years of school. Right now I'm learning some handy skills, and thusfar I am pleased with the course of my career, but I have a feeling the winds of change will sweep me into a new location within a year or two. I am still waiting for that big neon sign in the sky which tells me what to do with my life. We'll have to wait and see...!
