Andrew's Story

Life Well, I am a recent graduate of Alderson-Broaddus College with a Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude) in Applied Music, and I will begin a Master of Music in Instrumental Performance at Duquesne University's Mary Pappert School of Music in August. I enjoy travel, poker, music, politics, reading, and other good stuff. I'm totally, head-over-heels in love with Sara Moore. We are planning our future, and I look forward to the rest of our lives together. School In high school, I had many great teachers. I remember Mrs. Paletta's trig class and Poling's history. Mrs. Westfall is the most difficult teacher I've had (to this date). She was great, though, and I retained some of that A & P class. I actually learned in Driver's Ed. Bob Beto taught me to turn into the curve and how to save brakes (though I almost died doing that when we were driving). The food sucked. Many of my days were filled with some kind of musical activity. I remember how huge the Bridgeport/RCB clashes were and how both teams were always ranked highly in the state, and that game decided standings in the playoffs, even if it was usually only week 7. I remember picking religious arguments with people. I gave that up a LONG time ago. I remember Honors English 10 with Josh Dawson and Blair Yoke. I had the pleasure of working with Blair for two summers at the James & Law Warehouse. He's still hilarious. My freshman year was so awkward because I tried to be like everyone else, and I had no self-awareness. I guess I've grown up a lot over the past 8 years. Life is kinda sweet right now, and I'm still doing what I've wanted to do for 13 years, and that's make music my career. College College was my real growing experience. I went from a geeky high school senior who thought he knew everything to a true student of the world. I blame Dr. Tim DeWitt, Dr. Jud Bracey, H. ...Expand for more
Carl Hess, Jr., Dan Crabtree, Kayla (Kessler) Crabtree, Dr. Kenneth Yount, and Thomas Lipsmeyer for that. When I came in as a freshman, they gave me "tough love" and put me in my place when I needed it. I have nothing but the utmost respect for each of them. One thing I've learned about myself is when I get a little bit of momentum from a little success, I need to not let my head swell and reinforce the fact that I'm not the greatest anything. I have so many fond memories from A-B that I never thought I would retain. I remember even the first day of classes, my first party (at which I didn't drink), my first beer, the whole chartering process for my chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (betcha didn't think in high school that I would join a fraternity, did ya? I didn't either.), and many other firsts. Of course, there were times I don't remember but was told about, but we won't get into those. The more I think about it, the more I'll miss A-B. I know a lot about the school; I have so many friends from there I hope I never lose contact with (fat chance of that happening, sadly enough). I have many mentors who helped me grow up. I will not miss Heiner food, but I will miss Moe's and Sheetz and Wesleyan trips. I have many friends from Wesleyan, as well. Many of them have graduated with me, though, so they all know how it is. Finally, I can't believe that in my last hurrah at A-B I met the love of my life. I really didn't wanna be another student that found his match while at A-B. That's just too cliche. I mean, there are only 800 students, and there are so many other people in this world, but the truth is that you probably have more than one person who is good enough to marry, but getting to know that person is such a process that it's difficult to repeat. So, at A-B, that opportunity was presented, and I have found my future wife. I'm lucky.
