Andrew's Story

For those of you who did not know me in High School, let me get you caught up. I was fortunate enough to attend Ransom School in Miami, Florida. It was, for the most part, a great experience. I met some wonderful people, and was very involved with the swimming and water polo team from the very begining. I tried out for the football team in 8th grade, but the heat almost killed me. The coach came up to me and asked me if there was anything else that I could do. When I told him that I liked to swim, he sent me up to the pool and the water polo coach. It was love at first stroke! I had a great mentor in John Spire and by the end of the season, I was starting on the varsity team. As center forward, surrounded by such star players like Andy Weinkle, David Salhanick, Bill Potter, Jim Kussel and Stuart Miller in goal, I looked good for the next 5 seasons of my high school career. I was one of the first "two time" All-American Water Polo players from the state of Florida and I had the opportunity to go out to California and play teams out there. The team was very close knit and a terrific group of people lead by Coach "Cav" Cavanaugh who was not only a fantastic coach, but a good friend. Between the 6 am work-outs that had us swimming 6 miles every day from August to April and my jobs at Mercy Hospital drawing blood and assisting in autopsies, there wasn't any time for me to get into any trouble. Upon graduation from Ransom, I attended Tulane University in New Orleans where I received my B.S. in Psychology. My hobbies were skiing and scuba diving. We used to travel all over to dive on wrecks and we explored a great number of the underwater caves in central Florida. I then took a year off and traveled to Rio de Janiero and then up the Amazon River from Belem, Brasil. I then had the opportunity to spend 6 months in the South Pacific visiting Hawaii, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti. Once I returned, I packed up and headed off for law school back in New Orleans and Tulane University once again. I graduated in 1982, got married 3 months later and returned to Miami and started to work for Janet Reno and the Dade County State Attorney's Office. I worked there for the next 14 years spending 10 years as Chief of Gang Prosecutions while at the same time working as a Major Crimes Prosecutor working mostly Homicide cases. One side case I worked as a favor to Tucker Gibbs was the phone ca...Expand for more
lls to the mother of Amy Billig, a teenager that disappeared from Coconut Grove in 1974. Her mother had been harassed by telephone calls for 19 years every month by someone claiming to have information about her missing daughter and then was becoming more violent toward her. Neither the City of Miami Homicide nor the F.B.I could track down the caller in those 19 years. I was able to identify the caller after conducting my own 4 week investigation. It was a Group Supervisor with U.S. Customs. I sat down with him in a conference room in the Customs Headquarters one Friday afternoon with investigators from my office, a Detective from the Multi-Agency Gang Task Force, two Internal Affairs Detectives from Customs and finally the F.B.I Agent who had been working the case for years, after lengthly questioning, he admitted to calling Mrs. Billig for the years since her daughters disappearance. It was a surreal momment! At that point, I told the astonished agent to read him his rights and arrest him for Aggravated Stalking. I later tried him ( the case was covered by Court TV) and he was convicted and served the maximum sentence. The judge in the case can now be seen on his own syndicated T.V. show called "Judge Alex". In 1996, I ran for County Court Judge and was elected successfully. I have been re-elected thee times since then unopposed. I am crrently assigned to the Criminal Bench where I have served all but 5 years of my judicial career. I have two sons, Andrew II who graduated from Ransom-Everglades in 2005 and went on to Tulane to receive his Bachelor's Degrees in Business Management and Finance followed by his Master's Degree in Finance. My younger son Christopher graduated from RE in 2008 (and was a member of the state championship water polo team) and he too iwent on to Tulane and earned his undergraduate degrees in Business Management and Marketing. They both now work at the Port of Miami and Celebrity Cruise Lines. My wife, Mary Jane, owns her own nurse staffing agency and a home health agency and home health agency that has offices that cover Miami Dade, Broward, Palm Beach counties as well as Tampa and Orlando. . We love to travel, so far we have been on 64 cruises and we are in the process of a complete renovation of our residence and are looking forward to the renovation of our place on Little Exuma in the Bahamas. I look forward to hearing from anyone from my past!

Literally, the Zika "hotspot" border. The blue building on the right is the historic Bacardi Building.
Home sweet home.
I remember when we planted a very small Traveler Palm many years ago on the back corner of our house back in 1993. Over the years it grew into a 12 stock ugly monstrosity that had to be removed so that they could now trench
Remember playing with Tonka trucks when we were kids?......
I just don't get flying a blimp down to circle an enclosed arena during a basketball game.
I never knew how to do framing let alone doing my own in my house, but here is the soffit that I framed between Saturday and today. Not bad if I do say so myself!
