Andrew's Story
Life
Many people come to my page looking for information on my brothers and sisters, I think -- Jennifer, Joe, and Phil -- none of them are members of the site, but all are alive and well and I can pass along messages to them, if you like.
If you're actually looking for ME, though...
After leaving graduated school, I moved to California in 1996 to teach English at a community college where I work to this day. My wife and I divorced in 2000. I remarried in October of 2004 to another English professor. (No, we don't sit around the house in overstuffed chairs drinking wine and discussing Dostoevsky, either. We watch TV, we grade, and we lead pretty typical lives.) My son Nathaniel is the best thing that ever happened to me. He spends most of his time with my ex-wife in Los Angeles, but I have him nearly every weekend and most of the summer.
My family continues to grow and do well. My daughter Maggie will turn four years old next month (June 2011), and my stepdaughter Lauren graduates high school at the end of May. Nathaniel still has one more year of high school left, and is working hard on his classes.
Due to issues with the economy, I am letting my membership to this site expire at the end of May, 2011. This means I won't be able to check messages or notifications left on this site, but if you want to reach me, I can be found on Ya-hoo Mes-senger under the name "anotherprofessor" -- be sure to spell it right! :)
School
Does anyone really read this stuff?
During my one year at Concord High, I was somehow elected sophomore class president. It was pretty disastrous. Our big fundraiser, the Valentine's Day dance, was obliterated by the "Blizzard of '79" -- which, by the way, was awesome! I had good many good friends there, but in the summer, Boeing transferred my father to Wichita, Kansas, which led me to...
Wichita Southeast High School. This was a tough year for me, an east coast kid at a midwest school. I made some close friends there, like Rock Miller, Arnold Britton, and...Expand for more
James Hughes (he went to Kapaun, though). We read philosophy, did a lot of brooding, and called ourselves "The Wichita Four" after an incident with the police that I prefer not to go into! My father decided he wanted to live closer to work, however, so that summer we moved to Derby.
My senior year at Derby Senior High was very memorable. I had teachers like Mrs. Mealing and Mrs. Brumfield, and I met great people like Mark Young, Joni Branstetter, and Desiree Roberts (whatever became of her?). I worked on the school newspaper there, and I remember making Pepsi runs for Mrs. B, who would sign me out of class so I could drive to the convenience store and get her that precious Pepsi (which, by the way, is still my biggest addiction!).
College
Let's see...the snowfall on the night John Lennon was shot. Taking midnight walks around the campus when I lived in Templin Hall. Exploring the KU steam tunnels with Steve Z. and Mark Young. Horace Highdiver (those who know need no explanation on this one). Dani Keller always has a special place in my heart.
English classes at Wescoe Hall. Disgusting lunches at the Student Union. Studying (or sleeping) by Potter's Lake. "Traying" by Potter's lake after a snowstorm. The dozens of supposedly secret places I discovered where I'd go to be alone, like one of the side balcony exits of Hoch Auditorium before it burned down, or the then-decrepit statue garden outside Spooner Hall.
Extremely late nights at the Sanctuary. Afternoon games of darts and quarters at Louise's West. The incomparable Micki Lubbers. Girls tanning in the graveyard on West Campus. Then there was graduate school, where I met the unceasingly funny and amazing Loretta Holloway. Melisa Thomas. Angela Crow. Listening to the campanile on weekends. Autumn on the hill. Always autumn...my favorite season there, when the leaves turned. I remember walking everywhere on that campus and never feeling like I discovered everything.
Professor Hirsch. G.W. Atkins. Iris Smith. I'll stop there!
