Angela's Story

Not sure who I was, or how I'd like to be remembered, but here's what I'm doing right now - I just finished homeschooling my autistic son, 7 years old (3/03), for Kindergarten and 1st grade. He's such a wonderful and special little boy. Some things are so easy that we finished well over two years worth of work, and other things took the entire time and he still doesn't know them. Teaching him was easily the most challenging, stressful, and rewarding thing I have done in a long time. I have just recently allowed him to try a regular school for some extra assistance. So far they are doing well by him, and he is showing them just how smart he is!! My son has other issues as well, and I've been working with a non-profit that trains service dogs. I worked to raise money for them so they could continue their wonderful work for others. Our service dog from 4 Paws for Ability is named Savannah and she joined our family in December 2009! We also see several therapists regularly to help him. SLP, OT, PT, it's alphabet soup weekly around here, and yet I don't mind. I am also raising my daughter, nearly 4 years old (8/06). She was born almost 2 months premature, but she was a fighter. You wouldn't know she was early anymore. I've got another little girl as well, she's 9months old (born 9/09). She's awesome. I didn't realize how much I missed the baby times until she was here!! She spends most of her days riding around on my back seeing everything. The rest of the time she's speed crawling around the house and trying to climb even though she can barely stand! After high school I w...Expand for more
ent to undergrad at OSU and got my B.A., and from there I went to law school at Capital. I got married, got my Juris Doctorate. My son was born just before I graduated, but I finished and went on to study for the Bar. While I was studying for the Bar, I was working for a law firm, and I got pregnant with my first daughter. Shortly thereafter, I was laid off. I never managed to go back to work or take the Bar Exam - my son's medical issues, my daughter's early birth, the NICU...life happened. My two daughters are a true joy, but my son is the most inspiring struggle I'll ever be so intimately involved with. Sometimes it is lonely or isolating being a mom to a child with special needs, but there is little I could do that is more challenging and rewarding than raising my children. If only I could get paid for doing it, our family would be set! My husband works very hard, and takes good care of us. He was a Marine for 7.5 years and now works in IT, all his knowledge self taught as he never went to college. I spend my "free time" (hahaha) working to support political issues that I believe in. I continue my research into the various medical issues my son lives with, and even more research into the legal issues surrounding education of special needs students. You'll often find me at the zoo, COSI, various parks, and the pool with my little ones. When I'm not out running errands or being a mom and wife, I spend time gaming on various MMOs and every so often I even watch tv. You can also find me on Facebook. What about you? What are you doing right now? Are you married, a parent?
