Anita's Story

Life I attended Washington Henry Elementary School first grade through January of my third grade year. After mMy dad had graduated from college and obtained a teaching position at a community college in Keysville, VA., we moved from Mechanicsville to Keysville in Jan1973. I attended Keysville Elementary the remainder of the third grade through 7th grade. At the end of that year, when I should have been preparing, along with my friends, to attend Jr High School in Charlotte Court House the following school year, my parents had the great idea to move out on a farm in Lunenburg County! So, I began my 8th grade year at the Jr high in that county. My parents' marriage ended and my mother took my brother and me to live in Chesapeake, VA where her father lived. I attended Indian River Jr HS for only one month before we moved AGAIN to Norfolk; I completed the year, and my 3rd school in that year, at The Ryan Academy. At the end of that school year, my father gained custody of my brother and me; we returned to the home we'd lived in for years in Keysville and I returned to school with my childhood friends at Central Jr HS in Charlotte Court House. My dad was no longer teaching but was commuting daily back and forth from Richmond. At the end of that year, we moved to Henrico County and I attended Douglas Southall Freeman my sophomore and junior years. Those were very good years for me as I spent my sophomore year singing in the Concert Choir then my junior year in Concert Choir, Girls' Ensemble and Chamber Ensemble. My dad remarried and we moved to Fluvanna County the summer between my junior and senior years - I HATED leaving DSF and the friends I'd made there! I did not attend Fluvanna Co HS, but did receive a diploma from them; I instead attended Piedmont Virginia Community College in a pilot program where I attended full-time, gaining freshmen credit while completing the coursework required in Fluvanna for graduation. I "graduated" from that school, having never attended! So, even though I didn't complete my HS education at DSF, I claim it for my own and attend those reunions. In 1983, I got married - it didn't work out and ended in divorce 1987. I decide...Expand for more
d to go back to school so went to VCU 1990-1994 and received two degrees in those 4 years: a BS in Mathematics and an MT in Secondary Mathematics Education. So, I promptly headed out west to the Hopi Indian Reservation in Arizona and taught 7-12 grade Mathematics classes. Planned to stay a while but life got in the way and I ended up returning a year later. It was fortuitous, as I met my current husband, Ronald (Ron), shortly after returning. We were married in October 1995. He is active duty still in the US Navy but wants to retire in the next couple of years. We were in Virginia Beach, VA and I was teaching in the City of Norfolk until 1997 when military orders took us to Pearl Harbor. We were only supposed to be there for 1 duty, 3 years, but ended up being there for 3 tours equalling nearly 9 years. I taught there in the Hawaii state school system and at a private school as well, teaching all levels of Mathematics. We are back in Virginia, living now in Virginia Beach. We have no human children, but did have the two Maltese dogs whose photos I've attached to my listing. Their names are Frasier & Daphne and they ruled our home; unfortunately we had to put down our beloved Frasier but Daphne still is healthy and happy. After enjoying a year's sabbatical, I was teaching at the college level in the private industry in Virginia Beach and am now working in the private industry but still using my education degree. School Deen Entsminger was the coolest teacher! I loved music and singing was a driving force within me. He inspired me to be the best I could be; he gave moral support even when he didn't know he was doing so. My experiences in Concert Choir, Girls' Ensemble and Chamber Ensemble have remained with me all these years and made my short time at DSF so wonderful and memorable. It is because of those experiences that I have such fond and overwhelming feelings for that school and those I knew and loved there. I discovered my best friend there. We are much more than that, family now. My life has truly been blessed by the connections I've made from this school. I know it sounds sappy, but it's true! Those were really some of the best days of my life!
