Ann's Story

Time to update on events though nothing is earth shattering at the present. My husband and I are actually enjoying some quiet time at our cottage on Manchester Beach on Lake Erie. We usually rent the cottage for the summer but this year decided to take some time for ourselves. I continue to in my career in music. For the past twenty-three years, I have been the Director of the Warren County Summer Music School (wcsms.org) in Warren, PA. This is a multi-disciplinary arts school which offers a wide range of classes for students entering grade five through adult learners. It takes place in June for a three week period and is funded through a variety of grants and student tuitions. We have a very progressive faculty and our students accomplish in three weeks what students accomplish during a semester in public school. MNA'TRI' (women three) is the professional chamber music trio (flute cello and piano) that I perform with in northwestern PA. We recently commissioned a piece by James Sclater "The Harp of the Dagda" which will be given its premier later this winter. We are currently coaching at Chautauqua with Richard Sherman and hope that is is the first of many pieces we will commission for this instrumentation. On another note, my husband and I have commissioned a new work for flute and orchestra by the British composer, Laurence Roman, to be premiered during the 2013 season at Chautauqua. The soloist will be my mentor and coach, Richard Sherman. We are very honored to be able to add a new work to the flute repertoire and excited by the prospect of having Laurence Roman stateside for the premier. There is also discussion of a performa...Expand for more
nce in Ulster following the Chautauqua premier, with Richard Sherman performing . On the health front, like many women, I am experiencing the return of my breast cancer, at the same site as previously detected. After twelve years of being cancer free, the demon returned. My oncologist in Warren transferred me to the Cleveland Clinic where I am being treated with hormonal therapy and until this week had seen a dramatic drop in my cancer markers. Strange as it may seem this occurred after I had completed everything on my first "bucket list." So, being upbeat, its time either for a new list or just skip the entire exercise and move forward with events and memory makers! Ah, another meh, the CAT scan on 10/30 found something in the right axilla lymph nodes not present three months ago. Back to the Clinic, on the 12th of November for ultrasound and biopsy. This challenge as you all know is not for the faint of heart. So we whistle past the cemetery once again...... In the mean time, preparations for recital on Sunday in Warren, PA with my trio and then off to St. Paul to visit our son. Our daughter in Brooklyn fared will in the recent hurricane and she is back to work at Paul Weiss. Though a long way from growing up in Avon Lake, OH and graduating from St.Joseph Academy (1967) and Duquesne University School of Music (1971) and SUNY Fredonia (1974) life has been challenging, adventuresome and awe inspiring. Awaiting the next adventure............. I hope that anyone reading this drops me a note. I have not been good about keeping in contact but will try harder to send back a note. Ending this missive with Peace Love and Joy to all. Ann
