Anne's Story
Life
I live in Apple Valley, CA, on the edge of the Mojave Desert. I am a Catholic Worker, our home is also the High Desert Catholic Worker. We take in one or two homeless folks at a time, but are mostly a retreat center. I have an M.A. in Pastoral Studies, and am a Benedictine oblate. I write, and have been published in our local paper and a monastic journal. I'm also a fiber artist; I spin, weave, knit, sew, and do heirloom embroidery. I still read a lot, and have multiple interests. I'm married to a deputy public defender, a wonderful guy- it has been thirty years. We have three adult children, a daughter, Joanna,29, married, and finishing up at UC Santa Cruz this year; son Philip,27,is a massage therapist for Norwegian cruise lines, and lives on a ship that circ...Expand for more
les the Hawaiian Islands, and son Thomas, 25, back at home, returning to school after finding that an art degree hasn't been helpful- going to the local community college picking up math and science until he transfers to UC Riverside next year. He is pre-med. This summer we put in a prayer/meditation garden in back; we have an acre, so the garden is quite large. We included an Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth, a 20 foot stream, and mostly native or at least desert plants. I give retreats at least once a month. I have autoimmune disease, and am disabled in terms of a regular job, but with help from the family the guys living with us, and (shock) a housekeeper, I'm able to do the Catholic Worker things. I find I am busy all the time; there aren't enough hours in the day.
