Armin's Story

I married Heidi Trieslemann while I was still going to the University of Waterloo. This past August (2023) we celebrated 55 years of marriage along with our two children and 8 grandchildren. When I graduated I accepted a job in the IT department with the headquarters of Fisher Bearing in Germany, Heidi and I both speak German so it was great opportunity. Heidi worked in export sales for the same company and also taught English for engineers at the Schweinfurt campus of the University of Würzburg. It was while we were in Germany that our son was born. Within a year of our son's birthday, we came back to Canada. I had accepted a job with the University of Waterloo but joined Revenue Canada, Customs and Excise in Ottawa shortly after that. Heidi finished her degree at Carleton University during this time. We adopted our daughter a few years after arriving in Ottawa. I quit Customs and Excise after five years and accepted a job offer with British Columbia System Corporation in Victoria. We stayed there for three years and Heidi taught at an Indian and Northern Affairs school during this time. After the three years at BC Systems Corp. I accepted a job offer from Revenue Canada, Customs and Excise (yes, they wanted me back) and we moved back to Ottawa. Heidi was able to get a job at Indian and Northern Affairs headquarters as a policy analyst. I had many fantastic opportunities at Customs and Excise including the design and implementation of the Free Trade Agreement database and then the design and implementation of the GST database. Google my name and DB2 and you will find the preface of a book that one of my guys wrote that mentions me. For those of you who don't know, a database is like the foundation of a building. If it is determined that the foundation isn’t right once construction starts, it gets very expensive to fix it, not to mention delays. In the case of database, all the code that is written depends on the database. It is also expensive to fix it resulting in delays and poor system performance. I had been presenting papers at computer conferences throughout the US but in 1993 one of my papers was selected for an international computer conference in Geneva and Revenue Canada, Customs and Excise sent me. I remember seeing the signature sign off on my documents, it was Otto Jelinek, the Minister of Revenue Canada at the time himself. It went that far up the chain of command. Two years after becoming a director of Data Management at Customs and Excise I quit the government to become an independent consultant. This involved many contracts out of the country including San Juan Puerto Rico, London, England, Beijing and Wu Han, China (with the International Monetary Fund), Los Angeles, Columbus, Ohio, etc. While in China I spent and afternoon walking along the Great Wall of China. While in London I had a wonderful apartment off Sloane Square in Chelsea. I remember getting off the subw...Expand for more
ay (tube, "mind the gap") and walking home in the London fog, It was like being in a movie. When Heidi came to visit, she was ready to move there. I came home most every weekend when I was working in the US, except when in Puerto Rico. I flew each of my family members down there for visits. I became tired of all the travel after 10 years, I landed a contract in Ottawa and then became an employee of an IT company in Ottawa (CGI). My office was only 15 minutes from home even during rush hour although I was also able to work from home. We live close enough to our son and daughter that we get see our grandchildren regularly. We have a total of 8 grandchildren as of 2022. I retired at age 71 (in 2016) and am spending more time with my grandchildren as well as spending time at my trailer which is in a camp ground at White Lake. In 2017. I tried my hand at wine making. I make Müller-Thurgau and Gewürztraminer white wines and also Malbec, Pinot Noir, Meritage (with juice from the Okanagan). I also got into gardening a few years ago when Heidi needed to give it up. We have this garden at the front of our house and I have received many compliments when working on it as people pass by. I have no idea what I am doing and I'm color blind but it seems to be working. I have started cooking a while ago. Our daughter and grandson were over and told me that my German Goulash was the best they had ever eaten, even better than Oma's. (that would be my mom). My latest cooking success is German Rouladen and Jägerschnitzel... My email address is armin at kastner dot net if anyone wants to get in touch with me you can also find me on F***B***. I see most people list their music preferences. Mine start with Sergio Mendes and Brsil '66. My Wife and I saw him live at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. My wife and I also saw Dave Brubeck at the NAC. He had been on of my favorites since I heard Take Five on the radio. Then we also like Blood Swat and Tears who we also saw live at the NAC. David Claiton Thomas jumped off the stage and shook my wife's and my hand. He must of thought we were important because we sat in the middle of the front row for his performance. We were not important, I had just asked for those seats and they were available. We also like Leonard Cohen, and also got to see him live at the NAC. Then there is Ian and Silvia. We saw them at their last performance together since they had already split but where contractually obligated to give their final performance at the NAC. We always liked Joan Baez and managed to see her live at the NAC also. I also need to add that we saw the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans at the Preservation Hall when I was at a conference there and had taken Heidi. We then had an opportunity to see them again when they were at the NAC in Ottawa. The only change that I could tell from who we saw in New Orleans was that the base guitarist was not the same guy.
