Arthur's Story

Upon Graduating Samuel Gompers High School, I attended City College of NY Harlem Campus for the next five years, taking 160 Credits and earning degrees in Electrical Engineering, Math, Physics, and History. Upon Graduation, I went to work for Wickham Contracting Company, a GC specializing in electrical work. I had worked for them during my summers since I was 16 years old as an electrical apprentice. At 25, I became an electrical Journeyman, and was transfered to the office as an assistant construction Project Manager where I was very involced in the renovation of Operation Suites at the NY Metropolitan Hospital, and in charge of completing the Final punch lists on 7 different School projects. The folllowing year I was made a Project Manager in charge of their 4.5 million dollar contract with GSA for the renovations the Federal Court of Appeals at Foley Square in Lower Manhatten. Our own forces did the electrical and demolition work, and we hired separate contractors to do the HVAC, Plumbing, Steam Work, Computer System,Pneumatic Controls, Carpentry, and Painting. I handle the scheduling, coordination between trades, submittals, etc. and I prepared and negotiated $ 2.5 million dollars in Contract Changes. Other Projects I ran were a 2 at the FBI Building at 26 Federal Plaza, the Municpal Building 19th floor (David Dinkins Offices), Grand Central Station, and Penn Plaza Stations, In 1983 I decided to become self employed and hired myself out to several local 3 Electrical firms over the next few years. In 1987, My younger brother Bill (who also attended Gompers) and I formed our own Construction Company, Preferred Contracting Inc.. After the first two years of hard work, we started making good money on projects with NY City and State Agencies as well as the Port Authority of New York. My brother became disabled in 1990 and worked part time for a year before going on disability. My Business still prospered and for a few years until I entered a contract with two people I trusted who walked away with $ 400,000 of my share of the earnings when the project came to an end. This really put the hurt on me finacially. Still, my reputation by this time enabled me to hire myself out to other firms at $ 2,000 per week plus expenses into 2005. In September, 2005 I had a stroke which left me disabled with memory and focus problems, particularly when trying to mutlitask, my mind shuts down, plus I have periodic tiredness. I had a foster son from the Bronx, in 1982 into 1983, for 14 months, includes his entire year at age of 14. Then He went back to live with his mom. I married a girl from my Bible Study group, a citizen of Australia who grew up in Brisbane Australia. We honeymooned for two weeks in Barbados. Ayear later we went to Australia for five weeks, meeting her family and friends in Sydney, and Brisbane. We also spent a few days on the Gold Coast, a resort area with great beaches, shows, and fin...Expand for more
e dining. We had 3 children: Michael (12/1987), Katrina 3/1990, and Gabriel (2/1/1993). Michael and Katrina attend College at Houghton College in NY. Gabriel is in High School. We would go away on two vacations each year. In the summers we went almost every year to Camp of the Woods in the Adirondacks Mountains. Do not let the word 'Camp' fool you, it was more like a 5 star resort. It has lodges that they rent out for the week, they have top notch Christian speakers during the week, a different one each week, a beautiful dining hall with great meals three times a day. A lounge where people play board games or do puzzles, a Great beach with smooth sand which you could walk out into the water for a hundred feet and the Lake Pleasant water would be just up to your waist. And they had two Carnivals each week, a beach Carnival, and a costume Carnival with rides, games and live entertainment. They had an Orchestra of very talented musicians and singers. In addition, they had boat rides, a miniature golf course, baseball field, basketball (indoor and outdoor), Volley Ball, Tennis courts, a refreshment and food hut, waterfront renatas, a place to dock your boat, helicopter rides, trips to hiking trails, golf course, whitewater rafting, mountain climbing, horsback riding, the Adirondack Museum. Every two weeks they had a new former Professional Athlete giving instruction in their sport (Baseball, Footbal, Tennis, etc. Also in Summer when my boys reached age 6, I would take each boy separately to a Christian camp run by 'Boys Brigade' where we would spend time together doing activities: Canoeing, Archery, Fishing, swimming, hiking, etc. Every year it was a great father-son bonding time. The last time I went was a couple of years ago with my 14 year old son Gabriel, we went on a three day very rugged canoe trip through the wilderness. My son caught a 16" fish on the last day, and I lost 10 pounds. In the Winter we had our travel Vacations: Disney World In Florida once every 4 or 5 years, Pheonix, Portland Oregon, Hawaii (My 3 year old son. when got off the Plane in Mauii. looking at the beautiful fauna, he Ocean water, bright sunshine, ask us: "Is this Heaven?"), Bermuda, etc. In addition, in my family i have 5 brothers and two sisters (2 are deceased) and my Father consisted of 16 brothers ans sisters. Until recently, we had annual picnics at various resorts that cater to family Gaterings for a weekend, and those too were good times seeing many of my cousins as well as my shrinking number of Aunts and Uncles. The favorite game played at these get togethers were is the Italian game; Bocce. Recently, due to my dramatic decline in income, we succesfully went through Chapter 7 Banruptcy, and we are facing having our home foreclosed upon. So I was born and grew up in poverty, and will end up in poverty, the cycle is completed. But All in All, I have had a good life with a lot to be grateful for.
