Arthur's Story
Life
After graduating from Clark, in 62, I went to Brandeis for a Master's in English Lit. In '64, I was hired back at Clark as an instructor in English. (That was a strange feeling.) I started out teaching mostly Freshman English courses, but along the way I managed to fit in courses on the Absurd, non-dramatic English Lit, and creative writing.
I left in 68 (no Ph.D, alas). After a brief stint as a social worker in Worcester--The bureaucracy and I did not see eye-to-eye--I got another teaching job at Framingham State College, where I stayed for five years. I finally realized that teaching, without a Ph,D. was a dead end for me.
Eventually, I went back to school at Simmons College and got an M.L.S. Grabbing the first job that offered itself, I moved to Frederick,, Md., and became the first full-time reference librarian at Hood C...Expand for more
ollege, a small women's institution. There I stayed for 26 years, eventually shifting over to cataloging. Two years ago, I retired and, for reasons which seem foolish now but which I won't go into, moved to Jacksonville, Florida.
Along the way, there were two failed marriages which produced two great daughters. They live in Mass. now.
And I live alone in an apartment complex near Route 95.
Not much of a life to brag about, I guess. No brass rings, no academic awards. But a lot of it was fun, and most of it was bearable.
Every once in a while, I check 'Classmates' to see if any of the people I was friends with have registered. Alas, they haven't. We were outsiders then and probably still are. So I don't know what happened to Ollie or Rusty and all the rest.
Do people actually read these things? We'll see.
