Barbara's Story

After graduating from Edmunds, I went straight on to Winthrop for summer school. The next summer I married my high school sweetheart, Doug Grant, class of '64. We were in Mr. Jones' trig class together. We are still together. I kept on attending Winthrop until I graduated in December, '67. He continued to attend Clemson. Getting his draft notice, he joined the Air Force. I joined him at Keesler, in Biloxi, Mississippi, for his advanced training as a ground radio repairman. Then he was stationed in Panama City Beach, Florida at Tyndell AFB. We could not have been more fortunate with his Vietnam era tour of duty. While we were living in PC, hurricane Camille came ashore, the house we had rented while in Biloxi was destroyed, so was the Grocery Store nearby and all the other houses on our street! I worked as the dietitian at Bay County Memorial Hospital until he finished his tour of service. Then we both headed back to Clemson. He completed his degree in Electrical Engineering, and I worked part time on my Master's in Nutritional Science while first working as a hospital dietitian, then teaching dietetic technology at Greenville Tech. For most of his professional career, Doug worked as a design engineer in the pulp and paper division of J. E. Sirrine, following a phase out of several programs at Tech, I taught high school culinary classes. In 1980, I became one of the initial 5 students in Clemson's first doctoral program in education. I got my degree in Vocational Education in '85. A few years lat...Expand for more
er, Doug went to work with one of the paper mills he had help redesign and so we moved to Rock Hill, SC. I continued to teach part time for Clemson, and now also for Winthrop after moving. I also took a class in pottery at Winthrop. I would spend hours in the pottery studio. I loved throwing pots. But all good things come to an end and I went back to work, first as a hospital clinical dietitian, then as their food service manager. When the opportunity arose, I returned to the high school culinary classroom. I earned my National Board Certification as soon as it was available in my speciality. Now both Doug and I are retired and absolutely loving it. We are active Master Gardeners and frequent volunteers at Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens in Belmont, NC. My Mother has been living and volunteering with us for the past three years. We continue to frequently visit my two brothers' families and friends in Sumter. We recently accomplished a retirement dream, purchasing a "new to us" Motor Coach. It is 26' so there is enough room for the three of us. Momma didn't think that she would like camping, but she does, and we plan to do a lot more. Our cat, Amber, even likes it. We have kept in touch with three HS friends throughout these years. I still visit with my best friend since the 9th grade at Alice Drive Junior High, Cynthia Witherspoon. She lives in Pickens County and now has grandchildren. Without children, Doug and I didn't notice the passage of years as vividly as do those who become parents.
