Barbara's Story
Life
I met my husband, Lyle Strahm, less than a month after graduation!! We married in 1991 and have four great kids - Kyle (1993); Mikaela (1997); Ryan (1999); and Laura (2003).
We have moved around some. We moved from Kansas to Houston right after we married; then back to Kansas in 1993. After I FINALLY got my bachelor's in sociology, we moved to Indiana - just north of Louisville, Kentucky in 1997. I worked with juvenile offenders in Kansas and now I work with adult offenders. I am the Director of a community corrections center in Louisville - Dismas Charities. We work with guys and gals getting out of prison. I found time to go back and get a master's degree in social work and graduated in 2000. I think I'm done with school now.
My kids are great. I've always believed in God, but seeing my kids grow just amazes me and affirms my belief. Some how, I was blessed with four smart and beautiful kids. My oldest daughter is very much like me. She's very outspoken and bossy at home, but outside the house, she's very quiet. I don't have those issues anymore. workers believe that I was every shy.
My kids keep me busy when I'm not at work. I love my job - yes, working with adult offenders and I love my job. Every day is different. You have to have sense of humor or you won't last. The job can be very frustrating and rewarding. Sometimes, it's the employees who cause the most problems. The guys and gals I work with have made bad decisions in their life and they pay for it even after their release from prison. Some will continue to make poor decisions and find themselves behind bars again. But, many of them really want to change their life.
It's hard to believe that it's been nearly 20 years. I never thought that on graduation day that I wouldn't see most of you again. Again, I'm not sure that I thought about it - just glad it was over with.
Workplace
Who would have thought -- I'm not working at KFC!! I never thought I would be a social worker - but, here I am - working with the most unpopular segment of our society and I love my job. I've been here since 1997 and cannot see myself doing anything else. It is very interesting and fun work.
